The name of the chapter is self explanatory. Our generic protagonist was born with his generic, over the top abilities, physical prowess, and handsome good looks. Or at least, after a tragic accident it was bestowed upon him. He saves the world from a terrible evil, and tends to get himself a girl while he does so. This is typical. This boy is not your typical hero, he's a young boy of average height, with a shock of black hair and generic brown eyes partially covered by his glasses. He's an above average high school student. He has no tragic backstory, no deaths in the family, (except his great-aunt Maggie, who died when he was two). He was just normal, he was born with his normality. And his name was Alex.
What is meant by normal is that Alex was physically normal. He tended to be a social recluse, and wasn't very good at making friends, he only had one close friend named Anna. They would spend hours together, talking the world away, but in all actuality he was alone. She had her friends, she wasn't always with him. Those days that he wasn't were dreadful. She protected him from the harsh words (and sometimes actions) of the others, kids can be mean to people like him. People who are average. The only way he wasn't average was his brain, which left much to be expected from him every day of his life, more from his overbearing parents than from anyone else.
In all other words, his life was a bore, and it wasn't a life worth living to him. Everywhere he looked, he felt persecuted. His happiness was melting away, slowly, but nobody could tell because nobody cared. Except Anna, she cared. She was able to tell when he was faking a smile, she always knew when something was wrong with him. It was almost as if she was able to read his mind, though he doubted that was possible. Maybe he just wasn't as good at hiding his pain as he thought he was. But at least he had Anna, she was his anchor to the world, the one good thing in his life that kept him bound to this earth.
That was until she found somebody else to better occupy her time. She began spending less and less time with him, and at the end of their Sophomore year together, she switched into another school because her friends were doing it too. She left Alex behind. He tried to make friends, but each attempt failed. Either way, none of them would have filled the empty void left by the absence of his only friend. Or, rather, the person who was his friend. He was now stuck with the immature boys and mean, snobbish girls that are typical of high school. Jerks. All of them. Even the nerds and the victims of bullies were jerks to him.
In order to pass the time and hide from his world if isolation and hatred, he needed to find something to distract himself. He was able to sneak a laptop out of the engineering room and carry it around with him, connecting it to the Ethernet and enjoying full administrative privileges. That was how he learned to hack, the first useful skill he learned from school, much better than learning how to graph the curve of a sine graph or rhetorically analyze essays and Bushisms. It was a powerful skill, one that he could use to wreak havoc on his enemies. And it wasn't his computer, so he couldn't get caught.
First off, attack the idiots with social media. But not all of them, just the ones who have caused you the most pain. Trace your way all the way around the school, finding the people who left on their Bluetooth, using the WiFi routers to your advantage. Once you've got them, connect to them and do as you wish. Find people's emails, send them links that give you all the access you need to their computers and phones whenever and wherever you want them. Exploit the secrets they keep on your phone, unearth the 'deleted' snaps that they sent and instantly regretted. Find one piece of blackmail on everyone in the school who'd hurt you. He made good progress on his plan, he only had 100 kidsleft before he came up on the one thing he didn't need to see. It was Anna.... with a boyfriend. Or a least what looked like her boyfriend, the way he was all over her, his arms around her waist, resting his chin on her shoulder from behind, the way he had always wanted to, and she was smiling, as if in ecstasy. It was a terrible minute or two.
It was time for Alex to do a little bit of digging on this guy who was all over the girl that he loved, but was always too scared to admit it.
And the truth was, he probably would always be too scared to admit it. After all, she was the beautiful girl who could find friends anywhere, and he was the quiet guy in the back of the room, keeping to himself because he felt nobody would like him for who he was (based on past experience, of course).
What would he do, he had to ask himself. Would he try to be brave, win her back, tell her how he feels? Or what he always does when she's around, stop thinking and be in a mindless state of ecstasy?
