//Saturday Morning//

Aaliyah's POV
My mom walked into my room with my brother and they both sat on my bed. I looked at them and put my phone down, I could tell something was wrong so I said "Hey guys what's up?"

Mikey looked just as confused as I was "I don't know mom just called me in here and said she has to tell us something."

Both of us looked at mom. She sighed then said "You guys know how your grandfathers been in the hospital for a few months."

We nodded our heads then she continued "Well the other day your aunts and uncles and I had a meeting and the doctor told us that he's not in the best condition."

I think I knew where this was going but I didn't want to believe it until she looked down and said "He has maximum 2 weeks to live"

I looked at Mikey and he looked like he was about to cry so I put my arm around him "I'm gonna take you guys to see him in a few hours."

I knew this would happen eventually but I didn't expect it so soon. "What's wrong with him." I said looking at her.

I couldn't imagine how my mom was feeling this was her dad after all "Well you know he's old he's lived a pretty long life. It's really just him dying of old age and he's been very sick lately." She responded

Mikey still hasn't said anything he's only 7 and hasn't had much time with him but I have a lot of memories from when I was younger. I asked "What time are we going to see him?"

"Around 2 so get ready soon ok?"

My brother and I said ok in sync then our mom hugged us and left my room.

I turned to face my brother "you ok bub?"
I called him bub a lot even though he didn't like it.

"Yeah I'm fine, I just wish I could spend more time with him."

I tried to reassure him that it was ok "Well it's not really too late. Mom goes to see him everyday you could ask to go with her."

He looked up like he got a little hope back "Yeah you're right, thanks sis. I love you."

He hugged me which took me by surprise since he never does that but I hugged him back and said "I love you too"

We pulled away from the hug then I looked at him I ruffled his curly hair "Now go get ready"

He left my room then I got up and went to my bathroom

I pulled my hair back into a bun and washed my face then got in the shower and took a quick shower.

After my shower I left my hair in my natural curls and let it dry then put on a light forest green shirt that read "1977" with dark jeans and brown sandals.

I went over to my vanity and did simple makeup then I was ready to go.

I walked downstairs and sat at the kitchen table with Mikey waiting for my mom to finish getting ready

She came down 15 minutes later then the three of us left the house to go to the hospital while my dad stayed home since he usually goes with my mom every other day.

//At the hospital//

Aaliyah's POV
The second we walked into the hospital I could feel my mood changed. The smell of antiseptic filled my nose as I walked to the elevator.

We went upstairs and my mom waved to the lady at the front desk. She didn't have to check in anymore since she was here everyday and she was a nurse herself and knew some of the people there

We walked in and I saw the guy who my grandpa was sharing a room with then I saw him and his face lit up when he saw us.

Even though he knew he was dying he still had the happiest smile on his face.

Mikey and I ran over to him and hugged him making sure to be careful of all the wires

"GRANDPA!!!" We said in sync

He wrapped his arms around us then we sat on either side of him

Mikey looked down at all the wires then back at him "Are you gonna be okay grandpa?"

He shook his head yes but I knew he was lying.

We helped him sit up then we placed the food my mom bought on the table beside him. He hated the hospitals food so someone always has to bring him something to eat.

After he finished eating I asked him "So how are you despite....you know."

My mom translated for him into Creole. My family was half black and he could understand some English but not all.

After my mom translated he responded back in Creole saying "Mwen kontan aktyèlman, omwen lè li nan plis pase mwen pa pral bezwen soufri ankò." ("I'm happy actually at least when it's over I won't need to suffer anymore.") I could understand him so my mom didn't need to translate.

I just nodded. It made me upset knowing be was suffering and that I couldn't do anything to help.

We spent the rest of the time talking about memories we had together from when Mikey and I were younger and there was a lot of laughing.

The whole time I was thinking how could someone in so much pain still be this happy? His smile made me smile.

I was going to miss him a lot. I was probably closer to him than any of my other grandparents.

After about an hour of reminiscing we decided it was time to go.

We took pictures with him just incase we wouldn't get another chance to then hugged him individually.

I wiped my year away while I was hugging him so they wouldn't see me crying. I wasn't one to cry in front of people and I didn't want to make him upset so I faked a smile then we all said our final goodbye and left.

So this is dedicated to my grandpa because I love him a lot and we aren't as close as we used to be when I was younger but he's still very important to me. Yes this was all based on what's going on in my life right now and yes it all actually happened just with some minor tweaks. I wanted to write about it because I didn't know what other way I could express what I'm feeling and I felt he deserved a tribute even though he won't read this. Guys don't forget to tell your family members you love them. You never know what could happen to them and I'm learning that as this is all happening. But thanks for reading this and I'm gonna start working on the next few chapters right now so it'll be up within the next few days maybe by Monday or even tomorrow

Update: He passed yesterday around 7 Pm :(  R.I.P❤️
