Fingers finding the keyboard skillfully, Amanda finds the right keys and starts typing away fiercely. Raking her brain as she typed, her ears focusing on the sound of every different key. Though she couldn't see, she still had four other senses. Amanda used them thoroughly to her advantage in her every day activities.
"Woah, slow your role. You could end up breaking a pinky." A male voice said scraping the chair outwards to sit in it.
"I've typed this fast before, I haven't broke anything, have I?" Amanda asks. "Seriously, Lucas, you gotta think before you speak, we have been over this."
"Whatever, Ami, you're just jealous 'cause I type faster." Lucas says tapping his fingers thoroughly on the desk he was sitting at.
Amanda snorted as she typed her last period on her essay. "Done. Can you-" Amanda didn't get to finish her sentence, as she heard Lucas whispering the words of her paper under his breath.
The sun was showing through the library curtains, Amanda could feel the heat of the rays. She sighed in content, Lucas slowly glanced at her but went back to reading already knowing what she was thinking. You could hear the sound of the keys being clicked in the silence of the library as Lucas fixed the tiny mistakes in Amanda's paper. At this time of day, the library was usually empty as it was lunch time. But this was their daily routine: Amanda doing homework for one of her passed classes, then Lucas proof reading it for any small mistakes she had made.
"Are you ready for lunch? Jody said if we were late again she wouldn't save our spot." Said Lucas as he saved Amanda's paper to her flash drive and unplugged it.
Amanda was standing up and opened her bag for Lucas to drop the drive in. Once she heard it hit the bottom, she slung her bag over her shoulder and grabbed Lucas's hand. He gripped it firmly so he could lead her down the empty hallways. The car doors slammed shut as both Amanda and Lucas got out of the car. They met on the sidewalk and walked the all too familiar path inside the small coffee shop. On the outside it looked all run down with the brown bricks fading to an ugly tan color. The lit up sign that said 'Sucre Chaud' was slowly dimming into a dark golden color. Inside though, Sucre Chaud had a vintage look to it. The walls were a soft pink color that looked to be fading a little, while the floor was a dark brown tile that shined even when it hasn't been cleaned. Tables were scattered around, some have four chairs and some having two. All in all, it was still the best coffee shop known in the town.
The bell chimed as Lucas and Amanda entered, the fresh smell of cocoa beans and different flavored cake filled their scent. Amanda started off to the side of the counter that had an entry to the back. Lucas followed behind, just like every other day.
"Jody? Are you back there somewhere?" Asked Amanda as she leaned back on one of the walls.
"Oh, Amanda! Is that you dear? I was about to give away your spot." Said a tall, skinny, blonde haired woman with a French accent.
"Sure, Jody. We all know that you'd never do that." Replied Lucas as he sat on one of the random nearby chairs.
"I know, just had to get you here sooner. You will always be my favorite two kids." Said Jody lovingly.
Jody, though looking young, is in her late forties. Her blonde hair always pulled back into a tight bun, dressed in a black shirt and blue jeans. Lucas always thought that her closet only held black shirts until she came to work with a pink one on. Jody originated from France and came to the US when she was in her mere twenties. Ever since Lucas and Amanda started coming to Sucre Chaud, she had saved them a table in the corner, and even named a coffee or two after them. She treated them as her own children and loved them.
"I'll be right back with your original, I was just making them in the back." Said Jody, then she hurried back behind the counter.
Lucas and Amanda laughed as they sat down. "She is a strange one, at that." Amanda said.
"You got that right. But you are too, she won't need to feel left out anytime soon." Teased Lucas.
Jody was back as quickly as she left with a French vanilla latte, a hazelnut latte, and two pieces of rich, chocolate cake. She set down the things in front of the two and sat down with them as there was no customers currently.
"Hey, Jody. What does sucre Chaud mean? I've been wondering for a few years now." Asked Amanda as she sipped on her vanilla latte.
"Yeah, I've been wondering too." Lucas added with a curious face nibbling his cake.
Jody chuckled as she looked between the two. After she stopped she started talking, "Sucre Chaud means Warm Sugar in French. I actually don't know why I named the shop warm sugar, but I like the scent of warm vanilla sugar so, I just removed the vanilla and changed it in French."
Amanda took in a huge breath through her nose as she smelt the place. Not surprisingly, the shop smelled of vanilla sugar and also a mix of coffee. The vanilla sugar was almost like a perfume, but could tell it was a candle since the scent didn't go away from the strong scent of the beans.
"Anyways, children. How have you been? Did you have a good day?" Asked Jody.
"We've been great-" Lucas said.
"-only an average day." Amanda said, finishing Lucas's sentence.
Jody started laughing, and soon enough Amanda and Lucas joined in. "You kids are truly something." Jody finished off saying.*~* 998 words *~*
