Nine:
The next morning I woke up to the buzzing sound of my phone vibrating on my dresser. I groaned and silently cursed my life for getting me up before I was physically ready. I picked up my phone to see it was a text from Andy.
Can I drive u to school? he texted.
I wasn't sure why but the way he asked made me feel uncomfortable and worried. He usually said things like, want me to drive you, but he never asked if he could drive me. I shook it off and texted back.
Sure. Be here in forty minuets.
I got up and took a quick shower before I got dressed and did my makeup quickly, then straightened my hair. I pulled a fingerless black glove over my left hand and pulled on a random SnapBack. Then I grabbed my notebook and bag and walked down to the kitchen.
I ate a granola bar, then swallowed it down with milk, which I just drank from the carton because I was you lazy to find a cup. Then I heard a knock on the door, and went to open it. Andy stood in the doorway, leaning against the house, his earphones in. I poked him, getting his attention. He looked at me then smiled, and paused his music.
"Ready?" he asked. I nodded and followed him to his car.
He opened the door for me, and I thanked him and got in. He slid into the passengers seat and started the car. I poked him. He looked down at me, amused.
"Tell me," I demanded. Now he looked confused.
"Tell you what?" he asked. I shook my head.
"You know what I mean. Something's up, I can tell," I told him. He shrugged and looked away.
"Well ..." he started. I nodded.
"Yeah?" I prodded. He didn't look at me, just chewed nervously on a lip ring.
"Er ... well, I got asked out on a date, and uh ..." he trailed of. I knew I was right about that sinking feeling. But I forced a teasing smile.
"R-really?" I asked. He nodded, not catching my stuttering in that sentence. "What did you say?"
"I didn't give her an answer yet ... I said I would think about it. I wanted your opinion," he told me, looking at me. I looked down.
"Oh."
"Yeah. Sorry, you don't have to answer. I just, I don't know," he looked away.
I looked up and laughed lightheartedly, and poked his sides again. He chuckled and tipped my hat on my head. I smiled and fixed it.
"I think," I started and looked up at him. He looked hopeful. "You should say yes. Don't keep her waiting."
"Thanks," he said. Then we pulled out of the drive way and went on our way to school.
We got there and got out together, then he walked with me to my locker. He stood against the one beside me while I dug out my binder.
"So when's this date?" I asked, ignoring the feeling in my stomach.
"Uh, tomorrow, actually," he said, embarrassed.
He rubbed the back of his neck. I only nodded before closing my locker in a slam. By accident, of course. .. Or was it? I didn't even know.
"You seemed pissed," Andy said, looking own at me. I shook my head.
"No, just tired. Insomnia," I said. He made an O with his mouth and nodded.
Andy left to the bathroom and I stood with my earphones in against a column near the walkway. A group of preps and their jock boyfriends came up to me.
