I stared down the empty hallway.

The two men came through the door, carefully lifting Mari behind them.

They gently pushed passed me, murmuring for me to step aside.

I walked down the hall after them, barley able to keep my balance. I was still a little shaken from this whole experience.

But it wasn't over yet.

Around the corner a door came into view. I sighed in relief as I read the small, foggy label on the door.

'Emergency room'

The men walked in, leaning on the door as they went through, inviting me into the room.

It was dark, I could badly see anything. I stood in the darkness.

One of the guys leaned over me. I could feel his hot breath down the back of my neck.

I heard a sudden click then a flickering light came on.

The guy leaning over me was sweaty, strandy black hair framed his face. I hadn't taken much notice if him before.

With his hand still resting against the wall, he stared at me for a while, then abruptly smiled as I ducked under his arm.

It wasn't a big room, but it did have two sections, the other which I guessed was a store room.

There was a thin bed in the far corner, where Mari was now lying, being attended by one of the guys.

"Uh... can I.." I said awkwardly and walked in front of him.

He smiled and stepped back, walking over to the other guy, who was still standing with his hand against the wall, filling out a report slip.

They started whispering to each other softly.

"...Do we call the cops?..."

"...He didn't do anything...."

"...Well, what are we gunnu do with him?..."

I eventually stopped trying to listen in on their conversation.

I turned to face Mari.

She looked so familiar. Especially in this state. We'd been through some hard times together, but I never expected her to do something like this over... Ian.

Did she really...like Ian?

If so, why only now? or had she just not bothered to tell me about it?

Either way, I loved her. I knew I did.

But was all this really worth her? I mean if she loved someone else...

I felt my eyes droop and me knees weaken slightly, forcing me to lean across the bed, across Mari.

I pulled her hand towards mine, slowly wrapping my fingers around the back of her wrist.

I loved her. The words echoed in my head.

A deep voice interrupted my thoughts.

"We'll be back in about 20 minutes, we're just filling out some forms."

"Look after her," the other voice called.

"I will"

-----------------------------------------------

I softy squeezed Maris hand. I saw her nearly every day at work, but somehow I missed her more then I ever had before, now that I knew what it would do to me if I never sw her again. She was such an important person.

I was still leaning over her, not bothering to get up. I wanted to wait. Her hand was cold and still, but she would be all right...and so would everything else.

Maybe I overreacted.

I placed both our hands on her chest, leaning in closer.

What was it about Mari that was so... Perfect... she made me feel like I was worth something. Something other than a friend.

I flashed back to the times we used to share...

I lent further still over Mari, the silence around us only broken by both out uneven breathing patterns.

Everything was still.

My eyes fully I agusted to the lighting, reminding me of the reason we were here.

"Mari...you didn't have to..." I breathed out softly.

"Mari..."

I knew that it didn't make sense for me to talk to her, Ive just wanted us to be alone for so long... even if she couldn't hear me.

I brushed her thin black hair from across her face and placed my hand on her neck, the other still gripping her weak hand.

We sat in suspense as her chest fell and rose, as did my hopes for Ian and Anthonys-and now Maris too- recovery.

"I'm so sorry Mari." I was just able to hear myself.

I heard Mari breath deeply.

She hand squeezed mine as I had done to hers only moments before.

"...Mari?..."

"Josh..." Mari squeaked between pants.

She coughed and spluttered, was she alright?

"Mari..."

"Josh... I..." Her face twisted and tears rolled down her face.

"Mari, it's okay... I'm here." I was desperately tying to figure out what to say.

"Mari..."

"Josh," she whispered, her breathing now back in a normal routine.

Her eyes remained shut, as if she was afraid to open them.

"Josh... where am I?"

"Don't worry Mari... Y-you'll be fine"

"Josh" she wrapped her limp hands around my neck and pulled my towards her, totally by my surprise, closing me to stumble a little.

Her voice was shaking.

"Josh... " She paused then sniffled, her eyes flickered open, staring into mine.

"Did I.... ?"

I moved my hand to her wrist, and nodded slightly.

Mari caught her breath.

"I'm s-sorry... I'm so, so sorry..."

She whispered.

"Mari..."

"I was just so worried... about Ian and... I'm sorry..."

Her hands tensed at the back of my neck.

"Mari-"

"Josh." She pulled my head closer and closer to hers.

"Mari..." I said again, softer.

"Josh..." her voice trailed off as she dragged her hands through my hair and

Pressed her lips

Against mine.
