The Hunger Games Book #1
Book Summary
Synopsis:
It's in the near future. Panem was the previous devastated America, which consisted of The Capitol, a city ruling over twelve different districts having their own work for technology and natural resources.
Long ago, a treaty was made among the Capitol and the twelve districts, The Treaty of the Treason, and it went like this: In penance for the uprising, each district shall offer up a male and female between the ages of 12 and 18 at a public Reaping. These tributes shall be delivered to the custody of The Capitol, and then transfer into a public arena where they shall Fight to Death until a lone victor remains. Henceforth and forevermore, this pagaent shall be know as The Hunger Games.
Summary:
It's the day of the Reaping. Katniss and her sister, as well as the other children from whole Panem shall attend the Reaping to be randomly picked for the 74th Hunger Games. Among everyone in District 12, it was unfortunate that Katniss' sister, Prim, shall be offered up to fight in the arena. Knowing this, Katniss volunteers and takes over for Prim because she knew her sister had no chance of coming out in the arena alive. Her accompanying tribute was Peeta Mellark, the boy who bakes bread for their family business.
Every chosen tribute from twelve different districts were then delivered to the custody of The Capitol for proper training before they come out in the arena. They were groomed and trained for the irrational satisfaction of the people of The Capitol. Each tribute had their special talents and abilities which gives them the hope of being the lone victor for the annual bloodbath. Some knew how to use weapons, climb trees, determine poisonous plants from the edible ones, and some are just exceptionally strong. Katniss had skills in haunting, using only a bow and an arrow, while Peeta knew how to paint to camouflage himself.
Every tribute shall make a good impression to the people of The Capitol to earn some sponsors. These sponsors would give them what they need during the game by sending silver parachutes in their places. This was the only way to survive when they don't have any other choice. And so before the day of the game, an interview was held to present them to The Capitol. Peeta being one of the tributes, confessed her love for her tribute partner, Katniss. Of course, Katniss was enraged but their mentor, Haymitch, believed that it was a good show to earn the both of them some sponsors. They were known as the star-crossed lovers, and Katniss alone was known as The Girl On Fire.
The official day of the game came, and they were sent to the arena where the tributes fought to death and made their way to survive every day, without food, water and shelter. Every time a tribute dies, the sound of a blaring canon will be heard all over the arena, and a hologram would show the faces of the tributes who just died. Only the stronger and wiser ones remained. Katniss and Peeta was there, along with Foxface, Rue, Cato and the other stronger tributes. Sooner, they were only four of them who remained.
A sudden change in the game's mechanics was made: two victors from the same district will be held as victors for the 74th Hunger Games, instead of one. This sparked a flicker of hope for the four remaining tributes inside the arena, so both partnered tributes came to hunt each other. Their goal was to kill both tributes from the same district in order for them to be held as victors.
The final showdown came. Mutts(mutated dogs) were sent to the arena from the game controllers to spice up the game. Cato's partner was killed because of being poisoned by the nightlock she ate from the bush. Only he remained and felt so helpless, but he still wanted to get Peeta and Katniss for some justice. Just then he fell off from the Cornucopia and was eaten by the Mutts.
Katniss and Peeta thought they were already free to go home. But a voice spoke from the game controllers, announcing that still, a lone victor shall remain. It meant that one of them shall be killed. Peeta being so much in love with Katniss, cannot even bring himself to hurt her. Katniss felt that it was unfair that The Capitol changed the rules all of a sudden. She brought out the nightlock(the berry that killed Cato's partner tribute) and decided that both of them swallow it at the same time, so that both of them must die and leave The Capitol without a victor. Just when they were about to put it in their mouths, the voice stopped them and announced them as the victors of the 74th Hunger Games.
They went home, thinking it was over ad everything shall be forgotten. But it wasn't the end of their sufferings...
