That night, the pack immediately began their hunt for Victoria. Kate had all but forced her sister to stay inside the house unless they were at school. As the days passed, Kate could tell that this was making Bella relapse. Without being around Jacob and the pack, she was forced to deal with the fact that Edward was gone. Kate wasn't complaining though. She would rather deal with her sister's depression and late night screaming than have to deal with her mutilated corpse at the hands of Victoria.

More often than not, Kate would pace around the house, senses heightened to anything that could strike her as being out of the ordinary. Charlie was gone, which left the girls alone for most of the time. He and his hunting party started hunting for the wolves out in the woods. Harry Clearwater with with him making sure that he never actually found the pack. Kate shuttered at the thought of Charlie finding out about Jacob.

The only sense of relief Kate had from this fiasco was when Jacob would climb through her window late at night and give her updates on the search since she was stuck protecting Bella, before leaving a few hours later to run patrol. They had found Victoria about halfway in the week trying to sneak into town from Seattle but, like last time, they chased her all the way to Canada and she hadn't reappeared.

These nights were special to Kate. She and Jacob would lie on her bed talking while Jacob held her in his arms. Sometimes Kate's attention would drift as she would listen to his heartbeat that was beating right over her head. She was warm almost to the point of being hot but she didn't care as long as she was close to Jacob. Since finding out about the imprint, she and Jacob had grown much closer. Every sense and thought wanted nothing more than to be with him every second of the day and when they were together she felt happier than she could ever remember being before. She felt as if some piece of a puzzle had finally fallen into place in her life.

But, Jacob couldn't stop the danger from the world outside.

Kate woke up that Saturday to the smell of coffee coming from the kitchen. She stretched with a moan and went downstairs to get a cup. When she walked back up she knocked on Bella's door to thank her for the coffee. There was no answer. Kate stained her ears but heard no movement from inside Bella's room. She opened the door to find the covers thrown back and the room empty. Kate ran to the door and looked out the window to find her sister's truck missing from the driveway.

"Son of a bitch," Kate cursed as she dropped her mug and ran to get changed.

She threw on some clothes and sprinted towards her Jeep pulling out her phone to call Sam. Kate knew exactly where her sister was going.

"Hello?" Sam's rough voice answered from the other side.

Kate tore off towards La Push, "Sam, Bella..."

"Kate, this isn't the best time. Embry reported seeing the redheaded leech nearby."

Kate swore and rammed her foot down on the gas pedal, "Sam, listen to me. Bella's out in the woods near La Push. You need to keep Victoria away, I'll deal with my sister."

She hung up the phone on Sam and continued on her journey. When she got to La Push, she pulled her car off to the side of the road and saw her sister's truck sitting there. She gave the tire of the back wheel a good kick before she began her hike to the cliffs where she knew she would find her moronic sister. With every step she could feel her heartbeat pounding in her chest. She felt on edge constantly looking out for Victoria.

Kate made it to the highest of the cliffs and saw Bella standing there looking over the water.

"Bella, what the hell are you doing, you idiot," Kate screeched at her.

Bella spun around to look at her sister before whimpering, "He won't stay with me any other way."

Before Kate could even move to stop her, Bella jumped off the edge of the cliff.

"Nooooooooo!" Kate screamed.

She ran to the edge of the cliff to see her sister hit the water. She waited with baited breath and sighed with relief when her sister's head popped out of the water. Bella laughed madly and Kate glared at her but began to panic again when a wave went and crashed over Bella.

Kate didn't even think about it and jumped off the cliff after her sister. She used her powers to slow the fall but the impact still made her wince when she hit the water. Kate's body went into pure shock at how cold the water was. What little air was in her lungs seemed to freeze her from the inside out. Ignoring it, she frantically looked around for her sister. Kate spotted her struggling to swim away nearby. Bella spotted her and pointed behind Kate. She spun around and saw Victoria swimming slowly, serenely towards them like a shark hunting it's prey.

Victoria seemed to be the biggest problem at the moment so Kate swam at her. The two supernatural creatures charged each other and collided with a 'boom' under the water. Kate's glowing hand grabbed Victoria's hair and ripped her head to the side almost tearing it off in one rage filled move. But before any damage could happen, Victoria kicked Kate in the ribs and pushed her away trough the water. Victoria followed her and lunged at her taking a swipe at her throat and missing. Kate threw Victoria to the bottom of the water with her powers and saw as her head collided with a rock. She lay unmoving beneath the water.

Kate almost swam down to end this but a warm hand grabbed hers. She started to struggle but turned to see Jacob in the water next to her trying to drag her up. Kate then realized that she was out of air and quickly began to swim toward the surface.

Jacob's head popped up next to her as they swam toward the shore where Kate could see her sister breathing heavily trying to get the water out of her lungs.

"What the hell were you thinking?" Jacob asked her angrily.

Kate glared at him, "Me? You should be asking my sister that! I'm not the one with a death wish."

Jacob sighed and continued to swim without saying another word to her. When they reached the shore Kate marched up to her shivering sister.

"Do you want to explain to me what that was?" she asked Bella.

Bella looked down and played with the sand not meeting her sister's gaze, "I wanted to see him again."

"Bella, he left you! He's not coming back and even if he was, I highly doubt that he would want you to do stupid shit like this that could possibly kill you. Do I need to remind you that Victoria is around? Oh wait, no I don't because she was in the water with us and if it wasn't for me and Jacob you'd be dead right now!"

Jacob came up behind Kate and put his hand on her shoulder to stop her and calm her down. Kate leaned into his touch almost wanting to back away at the way his warmth seemed to burn her ice cold skin.

Sam came bursting through the trees, "Jake, get them home. I'm going to go help out over at Harry's place!"

As soon as he left Kate turned to Jacob, "What happened at Harry's place?"

Jacob looked at her sadly, "Harry had a heart attack. Our dads are over at his place right now."

Kate took a couple steps back from him, "Jacob tell me he's okay?"

"He's gone."

Her lip started to tremble but she bit it. This couldn't stop the tears that fell down her face. Jacob rushed forward and enveloped her in his arms rubbing her back.

"I know," he whispered into her hair.

Kate shook against him trying to no sob. She wanted nothing more than just to stand here in his arms. After a minute or two she pulled back from him.

"Come on, let's get Bella into dry clothes before she dies of hypothermia and all of this was for nothing."
