Alex's Point of View
The world has come to its untimely demise, or has just been changed, depending on how it's viewed. The undead roam the streets and humans convert into monsters themselves, doing unspeakable things to survive. Like my family always told me, sometimes bad things happen in this world that we just have to deal with. I have to deal with being alone all the time, running from danger, and not knowing what is going to come my way. Unpredictability is what would scare most, but I am taking this ride until I die and when that day comes, I can claim that I'd lived a life of adventure.
In viewing distance, I spot a small shopping place with only a few walkers, as I call them, in the parking lot. Alright, this will be a breeze, I think to myself as I duck behind a Buick, only a mere five feet from me. I run quickly to my nearest victim and jab my pocket knife through its cranium, repeating this four more times until I am the last 'man' standing. "Now that that's done let's see if anything is inside," I huff to myself, all the while trying to catch my breath. A small bell jingles as I open the door slightly, having my weapon at hand just in case something or someone decides to show themselves.
As I declare the shop safe, I enter still alert. To my left, I see a wooden checkout counter displaying different little things and behind it is several different packs of cigarettes lined up on a wall. There is a sea of broken glass and plastic spread across the floor, along with empty containers or wrappers that at one time contained food. Great. Looks like this place has already been looted, I mentally state disappointed. Just to make sure I didn't miss anything, I make one last loop around the store. Nothing in there could be useful to me in any way, but something did catch my eye. Inside the jewelry counter stood a beautiful golden locket, seeming unharmed by the chaos that has happened. I tried not to think about it, since it would just be an extra thing for me to carry. But, I couldn't resist. My hand reached for it through a broken hole, lifting the small chain into my palm.
Crash! The glass door had been broken by the pressure of a small herd of walkers. My heart dropped at the surprising sound. All I could do at the moment was stand there in shock until one of them lunged at me, trying to take a chunk out of my arm. In reaction, I lifted my knife and killed it, running to the door I had noticed towards the back of the store. Using all my energy, I sprinted into the woods, knowing the herd would probably be near the main roads. When I thought it was safe, I slowly made my way back towards a road, seeing as it may be easier to walk on. Exhaustion was starting to take its toll on me after about a mile of walking along the black strip of asphalt. I was getting lightheaded, dizzy, and my legs throbbed. Although, I knew in the back of my mind I couldn't just stop because the walkers could catch up. To avoid that happening, I traveled on for two more miles. At this point, I didn't care if the walkers caught up, I just needed to rest. I dropped down to my knees and laid my head on the hard ground. Before closing my eyes for what could be the last time, I swear I could hear the roar of an engine and a figure of a man riding a motorcycle coming toward me.
