Arizona
I was alone.
I hadn't been left alone in the three months I had been in the hospital.
Not wanting to anger Calliope, I got out of bed and then made the bed. I picked up clothes and straightened the room. Grabbing my dishes, I took them to the sink. There were other dishes littering the bar and so I collected them.
Emptying the dishwasher quickly, I put the dirty dishes inside and closed the door. Then I started cleaning. I really wanted Callie to be happy when she came home. I vacuumed the apartment and dusted the furniture. Then the phone rang.
At first, I hesitated, but answered anyway.
"Zona?" It's Callie.
"Yes?" I ask. My voice is still scared, weak and vulnerable. So was my body. So was my personality.
"Are you okay?"
"I'm okay."
"Okay. I love you."
"Goodbye, Callie."
There was a silence on the other end. Though her voice cracked and she sounded emotional, she responded with "Goodbye, Arizona."
I hang up, then I washed the dirty clothes and scrubbed down the counters. I cleaned out the fridge and freezer. Putting the wet clothes in the dryer and another load in the wash, I was about to go scrub down the shower when there was a knock on the door.
I froze.
My instincts told her to hide, but Calliope had instructed me to answer the door. I looked at the time.
It was 12:10.
Setting down the cleaning products, I began walking to the door when another bout of banging on the door greeted my ears along with Mark's voice. "Open the door, Blondie."
I opened it cautiously and was greeted with Mark's smiling face. "Hiya Robbins."I stood aside and let him in. "Hi Mark."
"What have you been doing?" he asked, heading towards the fridge and setting the bag in his hand inside. He whistled. "I don't think this fridge was this clean when you bought it."
"I want Callie to be happy," I say hopefully. That prompted Mark to look around the rest of the apartment. It was spotless. "Can I get you anything?"
"Robbins, you never ask me that," Mark informed me. He saw the cleaning products on the floor. "What are these for?"
"I was just going to clean the bathroom."
"No you're not."
"But I have to."
"No, you don't. We, are going to watch movies," he said, spur of the moment.
"But-" he cut her off.
"Arizona, you are not a slave anymore."
