Blume opened her eyes to an annoyingly loud sound. She reached over to hit her alarm, but it didn't stop. Suddenly Blume became aware of her surroundings. "Wake up Blume!" Her mother shouted, "You're gonna be late!" Blume's heart rate intensified as she shot up out of bed, before calming back down with an unimpressed frown on her face. "Totally not funny mom, schools out, it's summer," said Blume. "I thought it was funny," replied her mom with a smirk. "I'm going back to bed," Blume said as she went under her thick layer of pink and blue covers, despite the warmer weather. "Why were you staying up so late dear?" her mother said as she picked up the book on the floor. "Fairies and trolls, pretty silly stuff Blume!" Said her mom. "It's not silly," Blume said.
"You've got to start getting better sleeping habits," Her mother said, "How else are you going to be up by 8 in time to come to work at my shop?" "The shop?!?!" Blume said, clearly distressed, "Mom, I don't want to spend my summer working in the shop!" "Honey, it's not like you're father's going to allow you to do anything else. And it's unhealthy for you to stay holed up in that room all summer." replied her mom. "But how is that my fault? Dad needs to remember that I'm growing up and its time for me to live life!" Said Blume. "Sounds like you need to have a talk with you're father, I've got laundry to do." Said her mom unhelpfully.
Blume headed out to the living room, still wearing her pajamas. "Dad, is it true? Do I have to spend all summer in the shop?" Blume said, desperate. "You listen to what your mother says sweetie." Her dad said, his speech slurred and his hand rubbing his head, clearly hungover. It was a sad unspoken thing, her family acts like everything is normal, but her father is an alcoholic. "Ugh!" Blume said disgusted, she ran outside in frustration hearing her dad shout something after her.
As Blume rushed out of the condo, she saw a bike with a shiny pink bow on it sitting ahead of her. "Surprise!" Her dad said stumbling behind. "Dad really?!?!" Blume said, not sure whether she was happy or upset, but genuinely surprised regardless. She was kind of hoping her dad would buy her a car eventually, but the bike looked nice and would be sufficient. Her father may have been an alcoholic, but whatever job he spent most his time at when he wasn't out at a bar or lounging at home made him lots of money. "Nice huh?" Her dad said. "It's great, dad!" Said Blume insincerely as she hopped on the bike and started riding off with frustration.
She pumped her legs faster than Ariana Grande at the VMAs as she released her anger. She rode by someone from school who made some comment about how her family would probably be taking the same vacation to the same beach like her family did every year and how they're NORMAL family would be going somewhere new and exciting. "Whatever!" Blume said, realizing that she night have misinterpreted the comment becuase she was in a bad mood and her true thoughts were disturbing her reality.
Exhausted, Blume arrived at a park that normally took her 30 minuetes to walk to. She sat down by a tree with a pomf and took a bite of the apple she picked up on her way. A rabbit suddenly ran out from behind the trees ahead of Blume, startling her and making her drop her apple on the ground. "Stupid rabbit!" Blume said as she got up to check what startled it with a sigh. What Blume saw beyond the treeline would change her forever.
