Chapter 7

"We have a problem."

Daniel gave me an odd look.

"Problem? What problem?" Daniel asked quietly. "Don't mess this up for me."

"Do you have somewhere we can talk? There's something I need to tell you." I said, my eyes meeting his.

"Let's give you a tour of the house." Daniel said happily, his smile not reaching his eyes.

His hand was back on my back, sending shivers up my spine and through my stomach.

I held my purse tightly as I followed him to the staircase in the front hall.

The entire house was decorated with fancy decor, and I made a mental note to ask who their interior designer was, because this person deserved to be famous.

Daniel glanced around before guiding me into a room.

It was instantly clear that this was his room as it was completely unlike the rest of the house.

The hardwood floors in the rest of the house were a sharp contrast to the soft carpet on his floor.

A large bed in the corner was underneath a large window that looked out across the back of the property and over the fields.

The room was beautiful, with pictures all over the walls and clothes cluttered everywhere but in a way that looked cute and comfortable.

"I like your room." I said softly, glancing around to try and take everything in.

Daniel shut the door behind us, pulling me towards the window.

"What do you need to tell me?" Daniel asked quietly.

"My aunt Clara, she's not mentioned much because she's sort of the rebellious child that my grandpa didn't like. She was like me, the youngest girl with two older brothers. But a few months ago there was an event at our public home in New York and tons of lawyers were there, your dad included. And I was trying to find my brother Tristan upstairs but I went into the wrong room and your father was in there with my Aunt Clara." I said quietly.

Daniel slowly nodded. "Are you trying to tell me that my father had an affair with your aunt?" Daniel said quietly. "Because my dad is a lot of things but he's not a cheater."

"No!" I said quickly, putting my hand on his chest. "Goodness no, nothing as risqué as that."

"Then what?" Daniel frowned.

"I don't even know how she got the files but she was trying to give him confidential information about the company." I said quietly. "I have no idea why, it was probably some sort of anti-Montgomery movement on her part to make a statement."

"My dad knows that you saw?" Daniel frowned.

"Well obviously I got my dad and told him what was going on, I couldn't let them ruin the company." I said quietly. "Your dad had been banking on a business deal and he lost a lot of money from it."

"Holy shit." Daniel whispered. "No wonder he hates the Montgomery's."

I just nodded.

"I'm sorry but I had to tell you and I-"

"Whoa. Don't apologize." Daniel said seriously, gently grabbing my shoulders. "Hell, don't ever apologize for being honest or defending your family."

I nodded again, feeling sick to my stomach.

"Listen to me. My father, he's not... He's not an honest man and he walks all over other people in attempt to get what he wants. I'm pretty sure that's why my momma left." Daniel said quietly, a desperate look crossing his face. "But don't... Don't go spreading this around."
