Have you ever wondered if genies and fairy godmothers exist? Have you ever wished that these magical folks come alive and help you fulfil your longed – for dreams ? Well , I did . And not only my wishes came true , my nightmares came to life.
It was a drizzling morning . The city was busted with people rushing to work and cars stuck in the traffic jam. I remembered , the sky looked like it was going to collapse , with grey clouds concealing the sun . It was no other than a gloomy day. I was walking to school with my best friend and also neighbour, Mark. You must be wondering why I befriended this boy. Who said that a girl and a boy cannot be best buddies? The grey pavements were wet with puddles of water caused by yesterday’s rain . Mark and I carefully skipped the puddles like what we used to do when we were small children. Pedestrians stared at us , thinking how childish can we get . We ignored them and proceeded to school when suddenly , splash ! A car sped along and splashed water. Mark was fast enough to move away, but I was drenched from head-to-toe . “Chill dude. Let’s get you dry in school later. ”Mark said teasingly as he patted my head. It was not a good start to the day after all. However , when I was trying to dry myself , I noticed an old lady at the opposite lane . She was staring at me .
After school, I stopped by the stall selling hot dogs to buy myself lunch. Mark could not come along as he wanted to complete the Science project with his friends. The old lady whom I saw this morning bothered me a lot. Do I know her? She approached me and handed me a pouch. “Here’s a little gift for you.” she said in a weak but creepy voice as she walked off. It was a red velvet pouch. I felt something hard inside and opened the pouch. It was a unique emerald green pendant , beautifully carved into a shape of a butterfly , decorated with gold studs around it. I was mesmerized , but why did that weird old lady give me this ? Without feeling suspicious , I wore the pendant around my neck . It matched me , a lot.
It was a stormy night . Lightning flashed and thunders roared. I was insomniac, and so I walked towards my writing desk. The pendant was there. Why would anyone give a pendant to someone random by the streets ? I kept questioning myself. Come on , make a wish . I trembled . A voice in my head . When I looked at the pendant , I somehow felt that it was alive . Yes , I’m talking to you , Alicia . Make a wish , fast ! I stumbled back , shocked. The pendant could read my mind ? I held it towards me , and closed my eyes . “ I wish I could sleep well. “ Suddenly , my vision was blurred . My whole body was lethargic . I started feeling sleepy . In less than a second , I dozed off peacefully through the night . So, the pendant could grant wishes and fulfil my desires. Wow.
The next morning , I woke up early and got prepared for school . There would be a test for History and I am bad in this subject . I wore the pendant around my neck like it could bring me good luck . “ I wish I could pass my History test . “ I whispered as I held it to me . Of course , you foolish girl . The classroom was tensed with anxiety . Sweat started dripping down my face as Miss Polly handed me the test paper and gave me a disappointed look . She knew I could not make it . After school , I went to the hot dog stall again , without Mark . I looked around , eyeing for the old lady who gave me the pendant . “ Having fun with the pendant ? “ I spun around and saw the old lady at the back of me . “You must be wondering why I gave you that ? “ I gave her a confused look . She laughed and disappeared into the crowd . I sensed that there was something mysterious about the pendant .
After dinner , I locked myself in the room . I held the pendant in my hand and examined it . Suddenly , my room was filled with smoked . I coughed and saw a figure standing in front of me . The figure was a young woman , dressed in an elegant gown with thick make-up . She must be a few centuries old . “ Hello , Alicia. We get to talk face to face , finally , “ said the woman in a thick ancient accent . “ Are you from the pendant ? “ I stammered . “ My name is Victoria, and I’ve come to make your life…..easy, “ she grinned at me .” Were you trapped in the pendant for a very long time ? “ I tried to calm down . “ 300 years . What do you think ? ” “ How did you free yourself ? ” The room was tensed . I dared not move . “ Don’t ask too much . You are my master , and I will always be at your service ,“ she started cackling in a sinister manner which sent chills down my spine .My vision started to blur and I blacked out .
I woke up with a pounding head. It must be a nightmare. How can a woman be trapped in a tiny pendant for centuries ? And school surprised me today. I obtained an A+ for my History test. I quickly held the pendant to ask for more , “ I wish I have eternal knowledge , “ Suddenly , everything in the classroom was melting away and everyone just disappeared. I was brought to a dark place where I could not even see my own fingers! Light shone on me all of the sudden . A pair of wicked eyes was all I see. Victoria! “ Are you sure you want eternal knowledge ? “ she asked in a serious tone. “Yes!! “ I shouted. “ Are you willing to trade something in order to fulfil your desire ? “ Without a second thought , I answered . “Yes I’m willing to!” My eyes glinted with hope and desperation. I want to be invincible. “ Give me your soul and I’ll grant your wish ! Hahahahahahaha ! ” I felt like my whole body was on fire . There was pain in my muscles and my heart was thumping very fast . I wanted to shout , but I was too weak . My head was spinning. What's happening to me? My body started to disintegrate and I could feel myself being ripped off from my flesh. Victoria....what have she done? I cried in agony as I muttered under my heavy breath " I'm sorry. I love you , mom , dad and Mark..." And there was nothing left of me. Not anymore.
There is always a hefty price we need to pay for achieving our targets , no matter if it's something good or bad. It's too late to be remorseful. Remember , be careful for what you wished for.
