Falling
Another Jily Oneshot

Lily watched from the stands with Alice Hughes as the Gryffindor Quidditch team strode onto the pitch. It was the final game, to see who would win the Quidditch Cup, Gryffindor versus Slytherin. She had absolutely faith in her house, and she knew that Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff were rooting for Gryffindor as well.

Lily caught the Gryffindor Seeker and her major crush, James Potter, staring at her. He gave a small wave to her and she waved back. James seemed to take this as encouragement and blew a kiss at her. She blushed and broke eye contact, pretending to focus instead on her best friend Marlene McKinnon, the captain of the team, as she shook hands with Parker Pucey, the Slytherin Captain. She watched James out the corner of her eye.  Madam Hooch spoke a few words to the team, and then gave a loud blast of her whistle. Fifteen figures shot into the air.

"And the Quaffle is immediately taken by Black of Gryffindor," Stephen Taylors, a fifth year Ravenclaw announced. "Intercepted by O'Neill from Slytherin- wait no, Potter has the Quaffle- Gryffindor score!"

The stands erupted into cheer as the Gryffindor supporters started clapping, drowning out the hisses of the Slytherins. A cheer emerged from the stands, led by James who was circling the pitch. His black hair was swept back by the wind. He seemed so carefree.

"Go, go, Gryffindor, go, go! Go, go, Gryffindor, go, go!"

Lily joined in, cupping her hands over her mouth. The wind nipped at her nose and she drew her red and gold scarf more tightly around her neck. The game continued.

"Slytherin in possession, they shoot- nice save by the Gryffindor keeper, Jackson has the Quaffle- oh no, he drops it was he dodges a Bludger. Caught by Potter, Gryffindor still in possession- he scores again! Gryffindor is up by twenty points."

Lily clapped enthusiastically. The game continued, Gryffindor scoring six more goals and Slytherin two. Marlene hovered over the pitch, keeping a close eye out for the Snitch. Lily waved at her, and then went back to watching the game. Her attention was focused solely on James. As she watched him fly, swooping around players and constantly throwing and receiving the red ball, a small smile crept onto her face. He really was handsome. Alice elbowed her.

"You like him," Alice whispered in her ear.

Lily felt the colour rise in her cheeks. "Who? Potter?"

Alice rolled her eyes. "No, the Giant Squid. Yes, Potter."

"Pfft, as if," Lily lied. Alice raised an eyebrow. It was times like these that Lily wished she wasn't such a bad liar. "Potter is-"

"An arrogant bullying toerag," Alice finished for her. "Yes Lily, you've said it before. But you still like him."

"Well, I don't."

"Do."

Lily looked down at her gloves. "Maybe."

Alice started clapping excitedly. If anyone noticed Alice's sudden show of enthusiasm, they didn't show it. "I knew it! I knew it! Just wait until I tell Marley!"

Lily's eyes widened. "Don't Alice, please! She'll tell everyone."

"But-"

"Please?"

Alice sighed. "Fine. But you have to answer two questions."

Lily eyed her best friend warily. "What?"

"Why haven't you said yes to James?"

Lily sighed. "I don't know. I just-"

She was saved from explaining by Sirius scoring another goal. Alice groaned at the distraction.

"Alright then, Lily. My second question.  Will you say yes to him this year?"

Lily opened her mouth to reply, but her attention was caught by James, well, being James.

"And would you look at that? What is Potter trying to do?" Stephen Taylors said loudly through the microphone.

James was standing up on his broom, at least fifty feet in the air, without any hands on. There was a collective gasp around the stands. He was looking directly at Lily.

"HEY EVANS!!" he shouted. "If we win this, will you finally go out with-"

Suddenly James lost his footing. Both he and his broom started to tumble from the sky. Lily screamed a scream of pure terror. What if she never got a chance to say yes?! She pushed past people, shoving the younger ones out of her way. She felt a bit bad but she would apologize to them later. Right now she was focused on getting to James.

Lily burst onto the Quidditch pitch and whipped out her wand. "Wingardium Leviosa!"

James and his broom stopped falling, five feet from the ground. She let them down slowly. As soon as James feet touched the ground, she rushed over to him.

"Hey, thanks for that Evans," James grinned, his smile oddly devilish.

Lily slapped him across the face. His grin faded slightly and he put a hand to the reddening area.

"What was that for?"

"What were you thinking, James?" Lily screeched. "You could have died, you freaking moron!"

James gave a crooked smile. "You called me James."

"Not the point! What on Earth possessed you to do that? I swear to Merlin, if you ever do that again, I will kill you!" Lily shouted, slightly hysterical.

"Worried, Evans?" James asked cockily.

"You really are an idiot," Lily muttered.

Then Lily did something that surprised both of them, along with the entire Hogwarts population. She crashed her lips onto his, wrapping her arms tightly his neck. He was shocked for a second but one he realised what was going on, he kissed her back, winding his fingers into her long red hair. They broke apart to wolf-whistles and claps, both panting slightly. She looked up into his hazel eyes.

"You kissed me," James mumbled softly, as though he couldn't believe his own words.

"Of course I did, you idiot," said Lily, rolling her eyes.

"Why?"

She bit her lip. Finally, Lily answered his question by saying something she should have said a long time ago. "Because... My answer is yes."

It took James a moment to process what she said. His jaw dropped.
James's face lit up and he wrapped his arms around her waist, spinning her around.

"Put me down!" she squealed. "James! You still have a game to win!"

A confused look crossed his face but then he grinned.

"Oh yeah."

He ran back over to his broom and swung a leg over it. He went to fly up but then seemed to remember something. He glided over to Lily who was watching him with a smile on her face. He hooked his feet over his broom, then leaned over and cupped Lily's face in his hands. She tilted her face up to him, and he gave a quick peck on the lips.

"Cheer for me?" he asked.

"Who else?" Lily said.

He grinned and then shot up into the air, where the other players were waiting for play to resume. Sirius patted him on the back and Marlene grinned at Lily. She hurried off the pitch and Madam Hooch gave a short blast of her whistle. The game started up again at full speed.

"With Potter back in the air, after an intense snogging session- who would have guessed, Potter's one lucky guy- oops, sorry Professor. I mean Black in possession..."

Once back Lily was back in usual spot next to Alice, she was bombarded with questions.

"Did you say yes? How long have you liked him? Was it nice?"

Lily smiled, sure that she could still feel the lingering taste of his lips on hers. "Yes. It was very nice."
