Twinkle, twinkle little star
He took two more swigs of his whisky, fortifying his courage, trying to still his shaking hands. The wind whipped his face, as he looked over the precipice, the dark water below beckoned to him. Leaning back he stared upwards at the night sky, "I' m sorry, I' m so fucking sorry" his voice cracked with unshed tears, he had cried uncontrollably for weeks and now he had none left.
How I wonder what you are
On weak and shaking legs, he inched closer to the edge again and breathed in the cold winter air. He looked around; he was all alone up here. The bright lights of the city below, of the existence he left behind called to him, begging him to reconsider. He shook his head and turned his back on it, on the life he'd decided to leave, embracing the starless night sky.
Up above the world so high
He could not feel anymore he was simply numb, he hadn't realised it before but he'd been numb since the day it had happened, it was no surprise to him that he'd ended up here it was inevitable. He walked away from the edge disgusted by his cowardice, he couldn't even end it like a man, he hadn't been brave then and he wasn't now.
Like a diamond in the sky
Sinking to his knees, he dropped the bottle and rubbed his hands over his face as the memories assailed him, the sound of distant laughter, a child's laugh, an innocent pain free laugh. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry" the apology was swallowed by the wind. With great effort he stood, refusing to give into the emotions that threated to paralyse him.
Twinkle, twinkle little star
Taking a deep breath, he once again made his way over the edge of the cliff, looking down at the water that called his name like an old friend. Gathering his courage, he stepped out into the open air. And as he plummeted down he saw them then, those who he thought lost to him, He smiled as the icy water wrapped him in its loving embrace.
How I wonder what you are
