A pebble rolled helplessly across the pavement as Mark kicked it along with his foot. The adolescent boy's head was bowed and he was currently daydreaming about a variety of things - mainly what he was going to do when he got home - but other things too.
He'd been walking the streets for at least an hour or two now with no real intention to do anything productive. He'd just wanted to get out of the house to go for a walk and get some fresh air before he would head back home in time for dinner.
At the moment Mark was staying over at his mother's place for a short while. Today was his last day in his family's town before he was going to head back to his own city, where his own apartment was. He lived on his own, and frankly, he was happy with it.
Mark paused as he felt his phone vibrate in his pocket. He answered to his mother, greeting her with a hushed 'hello' and acknowledging her request for him to come back home as soon as he could. He guessed it was getting pretty late - The sun had almost dipped completely behind the buildings on the horizon. After that the streets would be pitch black.
He chatted with her for a short while until something suddenly stopped him. He lifted his phone away from his ear and began to listen in on the sounds around him.
Then he heard it. A soft whimper, almost inaudible from where he was. He thought about dismissing the sound for a long moment, but eventually his instincts willed him on to check out what it was.
He began to move forwards to see if the whimpering became any louder as he walked. The fact that the streets were almost completely abandoned made him feel a little uneasy, too - There were no cars or people around. Just him and whatever was crying out. The town was often like this in the afternoon, but today seemed a little different.
Slowly he began to realise that the sound was growing louder as he walked so he quickened his pace.
He kept going until it sounded like it was right beside him. He began to look around him for any sign of where it was coming from. "Uh, hello?" He called. His voice echoed off of the surrounding buildings, and he was subconsciously on alert too, just incase this was all a trap to lure him into a dangerous place.
"H...Help.."
Mark froze as he heard a reply. The person who had spoken sounded frail and even frightened. It made his heart sink.
After looking around a bit more he finally saw who had called out to him. In one of the nearby alleyways there was the dim silhouette of a boy around his age lying on the floor, looking clearly in pain. Mark could see that he was shaking violently. Something was definitely wrong with him.
"Oh my goodness, are you alright?" Mark gasped, hurrying over to the boy. As he came closer the silhouette slowly revealed a boy with vibrant green hair and blood-stained clothes. His ocean gaze was glazed with terror and the smell of blood was heavy on him. It honestly made Mark feel queasy but he pushed the feeling away.
"Argh, fook.." The boy rasped, bringing his hand to his head and wincing.
"Look, it'll be ok, I'll call someone," Mark assured him, slipping his phone back out from his pocket and shakily dialling the ambulance. He was panicking but he knew he was doing the right thing. He hadn't been in this sort of situation before and he hadn't been prepared to be in one today. Heck, he didn't even know what had happened to this poor boy in the first place.
"Hello?" Mark didn't like how his voice was shaking but he continued to speak anyway. "Uh, y-yea, I need someone to come down to Crawford street, I am here with a boy who needs some medical atten-" Mark jolted in surprise as his phone was smacked out of his hand by the boy. It skidded across the ground beside him.
"What did you do that for?!" Mark gasped. There was a bit of harshness in his voice.
"You're one of them, aren't you?" The boy growled. He made an attempt to sit up but failed, falling back on his side.
"One of them? N-No, my name is Mark, I'm just trying to help..." Mark swallowed nervously and glanced over to his phone. He heard the faint voices of the people at the emergency centre calling out from his mobile, trying to make contact with him.The boy glared at him without a word. Mark could feel his cold gaze piercing into him. He was now having second thoughts about helping him.
Eventually he spoke again, his voice as menacing as before, "Are you sure?"
Mark nodded, stiffening. He didn't even know what he meant by 'one of them.'Just as Mark was expecting another reply to come from him he suddenly collapsed on the ground with a thud.
"Huh...? Are you ok?" Mark grabbed his arm and shook him in an attempt to wake him up again, then pressed two fingers on his throat to check for a pulse. To his relief he felt the soft thump of his heart. He'd just passed out, he was ok.
With a sigh he leant over and grabbed his phone in one swift movement, answering to the people at the emergency centre again and finishing telling them his exact location. He cast occasional glances to the boy in case he woke up while he wasn't looking.
After a short while Mark realised that he needed to know more about this boy if he was to help. The only information he had from him at the moment was that he'd been attacked by 'them' (whoever 'they' were) and that he needed medical assistance as soon as possible.
Once the call was finished he took off the blue flannel shirt he was wearing, covered one of the worst cuts on his arm and tightened the sleeve around it. The least he could do was stop the bleeding while he waited for the ambulance to arrive. He then lay the rest of his flannel underneath his head so it was protected from the rough asphalt.
He felt his own heart beating rapidly as he sat there with a firm grip on the shirt, trying to process all that had just happened. It'd gone from a simple call with his mother to this, and he was still struggling to register all that was going on. There was no way he was going to arrive home on time now - The street lights were already beginning to flicker out as time passed.
All he knew was that he wanted to help this boy.
