Chapter One
PAIN! That's the only word I remember. The only word that came to me when I woke up staring fixedly into the milky skies where I watched birds flapping their wings showing their clear dominance over the air. The air was brisk, rather harsh as it blew across my face while my hands slithered across the sandy coast absorbing all the feelings. While I processed all these emotions the only word that felt easy to me was pain. And up until the later part of my life, it had metamorphosed and gathered new friends like a little boy in a new neighborhood. Loneliness, depression, angst. Those were its new friends and they did pain's work when it took a short abrupt vacation. My name is Jason. Jason black. At least that's what my adopted family said. They also told me that my parents had died in a series of unfortunate events. They linked me to the great Black family, you know, the descendants of one of the founders of our city Belk. One of the twelve sages who with their will and abilities formed our city and placed it upon the pillars of morality and equality, justice being the principle cardinal. Belk was subdivided into separate clans or communities who had their own unique ability. The Aloof clan could control the weather, they can make the spring rains pour out of the skies or the summer sun stretch across Belk like a light blanket, depending on their mood. They were in charge of the Belk's Climate and called a general meeting of the clans to decide which type of weather they wanted at each time of the year. The Benzu clan were people with great telepathic skills. They could control anyone's mind and enforce their will on them. The Crocku clan had great telekinetic skills and the force field powers also accompanied it. I came from this clan and ironically both my real and adoptive parents were from this clan. They could move things with their mind or shield themselves from harm by controlling the molecules in the air to form a protective ball around them or on anyone they pleased. The people of the Del clan could teleport to anywhere they pleased no limitations. I always wished I had those abilities or perhaps i were from that clan. I could go far away from this stagnant city with its boring life, but no one ever talked about life outside the city. The En clan could control the earth. They could cause an earthquake or make the earth open and swallow anyone who implored their wrath. The Fin clan were more of the truth seekers. They could decipher when someone's lying or they could compel someone to say the truth with their pure powerful minds. The Ginger clan could control water. It was believed that the advanced people in the clan could do more things like control ice. The Hanz clan could absorb and emit high voltages of electricity. The Iuwa clan could control electronics. The controlled every machine ran by a computer. I guess you can say they were the computer guys. The Kinsu clan were more of the fire people. They could bend fire and turn it into their slave. The Lamu clan were more of the nature guys. They could control all the animals and the green plants. It was also believed that the could control the tides and the seasons of Belk. The Moas clan. Well you can say that they didn't do much except shoot green slimy stuff from every part of their body apart from their eyes, nose and mouth. At least that's what everyone thought.
It was the wisdom of the twelve sages that each clan was vulnerable and unique its own way. This was to ensure no clan was stronger than the other. Every clan had the right to live. Even the less significant clan was important. Anyone who broke this rule was smeared with severe judgement. The twelve sages in their unquestionable wisdom would send down their wrath in a terrifying form. The most common form being the invisible curse. It was actually an invisible frog who usually left a white trail everywhere it went.
