10 year old Marrielle Aliana Kingsman, or Ali as she perfered, was, well for lack of a better word, a freak.  Or at least that's what everyone at her school, Jefferson Elementry, called her.  Yes even the little kids back then were rude.  Anyways her birthday was in January, almost half way through the school year, and what she finds out on that day may change her life forever....

~~~ Ali's POV ~~~
"Marrielle Kingsman!  Get you lazy bum out of bed and come open a present!" mum called out from down stairs.
I shot right up out of bed and ran down the stairs.  "Coming mum!!"
Today, January 21st, is the best day of the year and the only one I look forward to, besides the last day of the school year cause then I never have to see those jerks again!
Hi, my name, as you already know, is Marrielle Kingsman, or Ali (short for my middle name).  Today is my 10th birthday, and as a present I get to chose what we do today, besides open all the other gifts.  Today mummy is letting me stay home from school so that we can do whatever I want.
"Mummy I want to go to the beach today!  We haven't been in forever!"  I used my pouty face to to get my point across.  Mummy hates the beach, like absolutely hates it!  The last time we went was when I was 5 and I went to far into the water or something, so she doesn't want me going back cause she thinks I'll drown or something.
"Fine Ali!  We'll go but you have to promise to behave this time!"
"I promise I'll behave mummy!  Now come on!  Let's go get our bathing suits on!"
I rushed back upstairs and grabbed the last suit that fit me.  Mum had gotten me one last year for advaced swimming lessons and it was a cute two peice that remarkably still fit.  I put it on but need mum to tie the top part for me.
"Mum!  I need some help!"  she came in in her own bikini and tied the strings behind my neck.
"Thanks mummy!"
~~~30 minutes later~~~

 Mum pulled into the lot at the beach and found a nice spot close to the ice cream parlour.  I got out the car with mum close behind and ran into the shop.  When she came in I was already deciding on the snickers flavor.  I absolutely love snickers!

We ate our ice cream, mum had chosen the moose tracks one or something, its one I'd never get, in silence as I stared out the window towards the sea.

"Mummy!  Hurry and finish your ice cream!  I wanna go for a swim!"  I was basicallly whining and mummy had always hated whining and her way of making it stop:  give me whatever I was whining about.

 She finished most of her ice cream but through the rest of it away.  I had finished mine like 5 minutes ago and the wait was killing me.  I waned to be in the water.  Mum really needed to hurry up.

When we got to the water I went splashing in.  Mum was busy setting up camp on a wetish spot near the tide line and was reapplying sunscreen.... AGAIN.  She reapplies like every 5 minutes.

When I popped my head back up from the ocean, mum told me she had forgotten the umbrella in the car and that she was going to go get it.  She said not to move from infront of her stuff.  The only thing she brought for me was sunscreen and a sandwhich because I only get out of the water when I'm hungry or I have to reapply.

Mum turned and started to walk away.  As soon as she was at the shop I dove down into the water.  The closer I got to the bottom the murkier it got.  I looked to my right and saw something sticking out of the dirt.

I swam over and picked it up.  It looked like one of those old timey "parchments" that old poets and crap used to write on.  I wiped it off and surprisingly, despite the water and dirt covering it and ruining it, the "parchment" still had words written on it.  It read:

                             "On thy tenth day of birth, I do decree, that thou shal live in liquid, that of thy holy grail.  Fish and man shal cometh to be as one.  Merged in mind, body, and soul.  body of man, and tail of fish, one and all, together as one.  Let thee replace thy limbs for that of a fish.  Thy true form shall be known, seen, and loved by all.  Let thy inner creature take form.  All shall worship thee, and you shal be loved.  Never alone, until taken from thy true home."

I swam up to the top of the ocean to have more light. As I was swimming I recited all the words in my head.  Commiting them to memory,  I started one last time.  I had jsut finished saying 'let thy inner creature take form' when I felt a bit tingly.

I looked down towards my legs where I felt the tingling was coming from.  I gasped as I looked own towards my feet, yet, I didn't see my feet...

I was blineded by a bright light, brighter than the sun light that shown throught the water.  I turned away to regain my sight.  When I could see again, I quickly shut my eyes so tight they hurt. I tilted my head back down towards my legs.  I cautiously opened my eyes to look at them to find they weren't there.  In their place was a beautiful tail.

I studied the tail, trying to figure out how I got one.  It was blue with a green tinge at the edges.  The scales were all perfect.  Not a single scale out of place.  It was much longer than my legs.  I looked back at the paper and noticed there was writing on the back.

                           "When you read you must be ten years of age at the moment you read this, to aquire your tail.  If not, you must wait untill the next full moon is at its peak,  Necesseties for transformation:

                                     * large body of water (nothing on land counts unless a lake)

                                     * meeting of age requirements

                                     * must have blood of mermaid within you

                                     * must read parchent upon finding it

                                     * must be able to read the royal tounge (in which the parchment is written)

                                     *must be of good heart and kind spirits

                                     * must have brown hair (all mermaids are first born human with brown hair.  Hair changes color after the transformation to what it was orriginally going to be if born a mermaid)

                                     *must find this parchment by yourself with no out side help (you will most likely start reading and re reading around the time of your birth, when the change starts.)

                                     * must love the water

                                     * must be great swimmer

                                     *need to be very flexible (this helps when you're trying out your new tail)"

Wait did it just say MERMAID!!!!
