"Older Brother, Older Brother! Come look at this!" Dayton exclaimed.
Ash rushed towards his younger brother.
"Yeah?" He asked with a raised eyebrow.
"Look at the sky! It's a sunset! It's so pretty!"
Ash laughed and complained, "That's what you wanted to tell me?!"
"Aww don't listen to him Day, I think the sunset is beautiful." Grace smoothly covered.
"Grace, stop 'babying' my brother! He has to grow up strong, like me." Ash joked.
This... this is how life used to be...
You see, my sister Grace was absolutely perfect. Blond, fair skin, the perfect body, the perfect voice, amazing grades... everything our parents loved.
My brother, Ash, was like a boy-version of her. He was the perfect brunette, the best athlete, amazing grades, ladies-man...
I, on the other hand, is this fat, ugly, slacking boy. I can't do sports, I don't have friends, I have terrible grades...
But here's the thing... I used to be loved... how could that all change so quick?
-----------------------------------------------------------
"Hey look! It's the fat faggot walking through the halls." A kid in my middle school called out.
"DAYTON, the stupid name, you have to do my homework, you know?" Someone else called out as I felt a punch forcefully land on my stomach, pushing me down.
"Ey, Stop that, know, yeah?" Ash called out behind me.
My brother, 3 years older than me helped me up.
"Shoot, guys, lets go, lil' fag had to call his savior brother. " And that was that.
That was how I spent the rest of my middle school years.
---------------------------------------------------------
3 years later- beginning of high school- phone convo
Day- Hey sis, who's driving me?
Grace- Me, of course. I can't have my little bro go to his first day of school without me!
Day- I love you sis.
Grace- I love you too. I'll be there in a sec.
hang up
"You ready?" Grace called.
"Yep."
"A'ight, Mom! Dad! Ashy! I'm taking Day to school, k? Love ya!" Grace called out and left the house.
At first the drive was a normal drive. And then everything happened all at once.
I was looking out the window, and then a truck rammed into us. I felt it all... I saw everything in slow motion, the glass shattering, Grace's head ramming into the wheel.. and before I knew it, the last thing I saw was Grace's face... so... dead...
--------------------------------------------
Beep. Beep. Beep.
I couldn't talk at all. My memory was completely a fog. I couldn't move. But all I could see were Mum and Dad and Ash... They all looked so sad...
-----------------------------------------
"Hey... he's awake..." I heard Dad say.
I didn't know what else to say... I remembered? I'm sorry? Mom? Dad? What happened?
I finally muttered something.
Ever so hoarsely I whispered, "Gr-grace?"
Mom started crying. Ash looked out the window.
And dad... he shook his head.
Frantically I tried to get up. This couldn't be true, it simply couldn't. Grace was alive and well. The airbag protected her! It-it...
"No, Stop, You must rest!" Words very similar to these were spoken.
I tried pulling the tubes out of my arms. I needed to see my sister. I needed to. Surely my parents are lying. This is all a trick.
"Nurse! Nurse!" I heard calling.
I wanted to scream, "LET ME SEE HER!" "WHERE IS GRACE? WHERE IS MY SISTER?!?"
But I couldn't.
Suddenly, I felt the strong sensation of sleep. No... I had to... I couldn't give in... Gr-grace...
----------------------------------------------------
"Hi Mr.Dayton, I already contacted your parents since you're awake. We are going to remove the bandages today and you can go... see your sister if you want... if you are well enough to walk." The nurse stated and I nodded.
"I-... I-... I wanna see Gr-Grace." I exclaimed and the nurse nodded solemnly.
"Here, let me bring you to a mirror."
"No. I wanna see my sister."
"Very well Mr.Dayton." the nurse responded and helped me get up.
In case you're wondering 'where my parents are', they've stopped coming to see me for a good 2 months now. Nurse Maybelle has been looking after me ever since. I can't get her to stop calling me Mr.Dayton. She could just call me Dayton, right?
I can't talk much or stay up long and I have headaches. I haven't been walking ever since the...accident. Plus, I have bandages all over.
They said, during the crash, glass pieces pierced my arms, and legs, one huge piece pierced my stomach. The airbag broke my arm and ribs. And a severe blow from hitting my head made me have a concussion.
I'm pretty sure I broke my nose too...?
"Ok Mr.Dayton, can you walk to that wall over there?"
I nodded.
I walked over to the wall, stumbling a bit, but overall I made it.
I rested a bit, panting. How could such few steps tire me this much? I know i'm overweight. I know I don't do sports but this... this is insane.
"Mr.Dayton, I know right now the little things tire you, but you'll get used to this. It's just you haven't been on your feet for so long. Also, due to the accident and your lack of eating or drinking, you've grown... skinnier... and you lack the vitamins you need." Maybelle explained.
She took me by the arm and together, along with a rack that held all of my medicines, we headed towards my sisters room.
As we reached the door, Maybelle suddenly stopped.
"Mr. Dayton... are you sure you want to do this? Are you sure you want to see your sister...?" Maybelle hesitantly asked.
"Y-yes." I stuttered. "I-I need t-to know."
"Very well." And the nurse opened the door.
I shuffled over to Grace's side.
"G-grace?" I called. No response.
