7:11 in the Morning
It was 7:11am, to be exact, I was on my way to school as usual. I was only 8 years old. I came across a big kind of wide man named Mark Hughes. He was looking for something. He turned around and asked me if I'd seen his dog. I said, "No, sir." Mark said, "He got out of my car and ran up this way." He pointed by my house and asked, "Do you know who lives there?" I said, "Yeah, me!" He smiled and ask if my mommy was home. She wasn't. The smile he made when I said no she's at work made me feel uncomfortable but at the time I was very vulnerable.
Mark asked if he could come into my gate to see if his dog was there. I didn't mind so we went into my backyard. His dog wasn't there.
After entering the gate he noticed that the only dog inside the yard was mine. Then he said, "Aw shoot! Look at the time your gonna' be late for school." I looked at the ground. "Mind if I give you a ride to school?" I said," Um.. Mommy told me not to talk to strangers." Mark replied with a, "You've already talked to me." He was right we had had a full conversation. So we walked back to his car.
The Car Ride
I hopped into the backseat of his messy Toyota. There was a younger man sitting next to him in the passenger seat. Turns out his name was Derek. Derek looked rough behind the edges. Kind of like a juvenile that escaped and was on the run.
Anyways, Mark turned down the radio and asked me my name. I told him, "Laura. Laura Cane." He laughed and said,"I'm Mark Hughes & this is my buddy Derek." Derek looked out the window and said, "Sup."
Mark told me that he knew my dad and that they had been friends for years! I believed him. Finally, we arrived at my school.
The Lie that Changed My Life
The bell rung at 2:35pm. It was time to go home. I rushed down the hall and exited the front doors. Ahhhh, the smell of fresh air! I walked and walked until I was at least 2 or 3 blocks away from my house.
Mark pulled up in his dirty Toyota. He jumped out of his car and told me that my dad asked him to babysit me. I was thinking why haven't I met this guy before if he & my dad were best friends? So I ran down the street! He waddled down the street trying to catch me, screaming, "Laura! Laura!" Derek ran out of the car and caught up to me. I've never ran so fast in my life.
Derek was well built. Muscley arms & you could tell he'd been pumping weights when he was locked up. Derek was just a foot from when he tackled me. I came flying to the ground. He picked me up and threw me over his shoulder.
Mark pulled up the car & Derek tossed .e in the backseat. Then slammed the door after sitting next to me. I screamed& shouted as loud as I could but Derek wacked me in the head with a giant guide book telling me to shut up. So I was knocked out in the backseat of some strangers car.
