"Cat?" My mother is calling me from the other side of my locked door. "Unlock the door sweetheart." I roll my eyes at her words
I get off my bed and walk around the boxes that have taken over my room. I unlock my door & walk back over to my bed.
"Cat?" She asks again as she opens the door and walks inside the room. "Have you finished packing?"
"Yes," I give a straight answer monotonously.
She sighs at my words and nods her head. "Okay I'll tell you dad so that he can move the boxes to the truck."
I only stare at her and blink once. She nods acknowledging my reaction as a response.
She walks out of my room & I can hear her talking with my father.
"Cat?" My father walks in and puts his arms around a box. "You labeled all your box properly right? You put fragile on the boxes with the breakables?"
I nod and he sighs as he nods back. He starts taking my boxes one by one out of my room to the moving truck outside.
I look out my window and see all the movers taking the boxes from the sidewalk & moving them into the truck.
I sigh as I go back to my bed and lie down. I pull out my phone & start my music. The sounds come out of my phone's speaker & I close my eyes.
After listening to 10 songs I hear the footsteps of my mother approaching my door.
"Sweetheart?" I turn my head to show her I'm listening. "Dinner is almost ready. Go clean up and then come downstairs." I nod and then she walks away.
After the song I was listening to is over I get off my bed and go to wash my hands. I then walk downstairs and go to the kitchen where my plate of food is already set at the table.
I sit down and wait for my parents to sit down. When they sit we begin to eat. As we start eating, my parents are practicing how to speak in Korean. I sigh as I hear them trying to converse.
"Cat?" I look up at my parents. "Aren't you going to practice with us too?" My father asks in Korean then repeats in English.
"Yes, Father." I reply in both languages and they smile at my words.
I look back down at my food as they continue speaking. I only speaking when a question is directed towards me.
When dinner is over I put my plate away and walk back to my room. I sigh as I close my door and go to my bed.
The only things left in my room are my bed, a travel pillow, & a blanket. I have a suitcase full of the things I couldn't pack away. I pull out my phone and start studying the language I'm going to be using in my coming day to day life.
My parents decided to move to Seoul to take care of my father's sick aunt. I, being their adopted child, am forced to go along. We are moving from San Diego, USA to Seoul, South Korea.
Both my parents are second generation Korean-Amaericans. They couldn't have any children of their own and decided to adopt. When they came by the orphanage 4 years ago, for some odd reason, they wanted me. They wanted to adopt a 17 year old Mexican-American that had been at the orphanage since the age of 2.
When the met with me they didn't care that I didn't really speak to them or that my face never really changed. They wanted me & a week later I was in a place I could call home. I could call the married couple my parents. I could finally address someone as my mother & father.
Yes, I was happy, but it never really showed. No matter what happened over the past four years they loved me.
Last month, my father got a call from his sister asking if he could go take care of their aunt back in Korea. My father was hesitant, but after discussing it with my mother, they decided we would move.
My parents were excited because they could finally go back to where their families are from. When they told me about the move I was excited, but they didn't think I was.
I started to teach myself how to speak, but I've only really masted the informal way of speaking, but I do know the necessary phrases in the formal way of speaking.
In a week we are going to be on a plane going to our new home. I wish us all luck.
