I walked onto the dock.  It was empty. Perfect. I need to have a good cry alone. I slowly wandered down to the edge of the dock, lost in my thoughts, when I noticed him. A guy, just sitting on the edge of the dock. His shoes were lying next to him, but his feet couldn't touch the water. Just when I think I can get a little bit of time alone, I complained to myself, this guy shows up. I sat on the edge like he did, moving as far away as I could without falling off the dock. He looked at me. I glared back. He sighed. I glared again. He scooted about a foot closer to me. I glared at him so hard, I thought the blush forming on his cheeks was from my eyes laser-burning him.
"What's wrong?" He asked. I was a bit taken aback. Why was he talking to me?! Can't he see I'm trying to sulk?
"Nothing," I grumbled back. "I'm just fine, thank you."
"No, you're not fine. You glare more than my middle school math teacher did. That's saying a lot. Tell me what's wrong. Maybe I can help."
Excuse me?! Who does he think he is, prying into my personal life.  But before I can stop myself, I'm spilling everything out.  My boss is horrible.  Shut up!  My family is moving, leaving me here.  Why would you tell him that?  I have literally no friends.  Please stop!
Then he just sits and stares at me.  What is he going to to?  Laugh at me?
     "I'll be your friend."
     "You... you will?"
     "Yep."
"But... you don't even know me!"
He paused for a moment, thinking. "Well, I do now.  You told me bad things about your life. I already found some good things, though."
     "Really? 'Cause I can't."
"Well, you live in the Florida Keys. Can't get much better than that. You have the freedom to get a new job whenever you want. And now you have a friend. Me."
That was it. I exploded. "You really think you can understand? No, it's much worse than that. In the last few weeks, I lost everything. You cannot console me. This will not get better."  I stood up, furious, "And for the record, I never needed your help."  And with that, I left.
