"Um, I was just taking a walk 'round the neighborhood," I croaked. " I swear that I didn't see nothing." That was probably stupid of me to say. I made it obvious I was saw some shit when I started running. The Latino and the Asian glanced at each other, then looked back at me. The Latino smiled at me but it wasn't in a nice way. It was a malicious smile, one meant to scare me. It was working.

"I know you lying, girl," the Latino stated in a calm voice. "If you don't tell me what you saw, imma have to hurt you. I don't wanna hurt you, sweetie." That was a lie. I could tell he wanted to kill me and be gone, and that he was gonna do that soon. But something was holding him back for now, and I prayed to God it would hold him back 'til I could figure out how to get out of this situation. I didn't respond to what he said. I could see that this made him mad.

"Trey!" he snapped. Trey tightened his arms around me so hard I gasped. My bare legs were stinging from the cold air and I know my sweatshirt is riding up, so they can see my boy shorts. I couldn't help the hiss that escaped my mouth at the breeze.

The Asian guy suddenly got all up in my face. His face no longer showed any traces of nerves. He held the barrel of his gun to my head and waited for me to say something. I was too scared to speak. A whimper of terror escaped my throat.

"Ya know what?" the Asian man grinned. "I think imma just kill you." I could feel sweat building on my brow. I didn't know what to do.

"Can we kill her later, Kyto? She pretty fine. I want me some of that today," Trey stated, pressing his body closer to my backside. I feel disgusted, and can't help the scoff that slides past my lips. Trey ignores it. Kyto seemed to agree with him, and I started to think they were gonna rape me or something. That's when the sound of police sirens came again. Trey's hold on me loosened enough for me to slide out of his arms.

I dashed past them at top speed, ignoring the burn of gravel and the sting of broken glass on my bare feet. They didn't chase me this time. They were too busy with the cops on 'em to mess with me. I made it back to my block, and flew up the stairs and back inside my place. I sank to my knees in front of the door, trying to catch my breathe.

Eventually, I went into Jaquan's room and saw Akeelah sitting on his bed, waiting for me to get back. She looked a bit scared at my appearance, but I was able to assure her that I was okay. It was easy to get her to go to sleep after that. I could feel blood dripping from my feet and sweat running down my back, but that didn't matter. Alls that mattered was that we was safe. For now, at least.
