I go careening around the next corner running as fast as I can, I have to get away from them! I run and run and run until I come to a dead end! Shit shit shit! This isn't good. Maybe if I can get to a do- I hear the first moans as they come around the corner, its to late. Those things are grotesque looking. What looks like used to be a woman starts shambling closer to me, blood covering her ruined blouse and ripped jeans. One arm is completely gone, ripped off most likely, while the other arm has huge chunks in the shape of teeth marks missing out of her pale skin. But thats none of that is nearly as bad as whats left of her face, the right half of her face is chewed down to the bone exposing muscle as she bites at the air, the other half is as pale as chalk, where it's not covered in blood that is, but the most appealing of it all is her eyes. The iris of her eyes has been taken over by her pupil completely while the whites have gone totally red, making her look like some sort of demon.
This is it isn't it? This is where I'm going to die and become one of them.
No. Yes. Maybe. I don't know! Whatever happens I'm not gonna go down with a fight! I look around the alley I'm in in hopes of some sort of weapon. There is a garbage can with trash bags piled around it, some lose papers fluttering around and- There! An old metal pipe. Small enough to wrap my hand around it and about arms length, not my first pick but it'll have to do. As the first woman starts closing the distance I swing with all my might, answered with a sickening crunch as the force of the blow travels up the pipe and into my hands. She falls backward missing half of her head. I feel my stomach churn from the sight so I quickly look up and ready myself as a group of four round the corner, all moaning and reaching there arms out towards me like I'm a ribeye steak on a platter. To them I guess I am. I swing as two break ahead of the group and knock the first one into the second. I don't have time to see if they get up of not as the other two have closed the distance. I arc my swing at a shorter man, who may have once been quite dashing, causing his skull to cave in and his body to collapse under the force. I jump back narrowly avoiding the next ones hands before I ready myself and swing at the plump woman in front of me, knocking her head to a wrong angle.
I take in a deep breath as I assess the situation, four down for the count with the last one reaching for me from under the body of a burly man. I walk over and his hungry demonic gaze follows me. I stand be his head, "Batters up! I say as I swing the pipe down on his head causing it to splatter across the ground as his body stops moving all together. Dead for the last time. I decide to hold onto the pipe as it proved to be a good weapon, although hopefully I can find a knife on my out of town. Maybe I can avoid anymore instances like this if I'm careful. I walk to the corner of the alley and peek out from the shadows. I don't see any more of them, but that doesn't mean a damn thing as that last group came out of nowhere. Almost took a bloody chunk out of my arm too! Slowly I creep out of my safe haven and start walking down the sidewalk, my head on a swivel. Im close to the edge of town so I should make it out before it gets dark.
As I creep down the street I hear distant popping sounds towards the center of the town and then a blood curtailing scream that cuts of suddenly. I shake my head to clear out the thoughts of how whoever it was met their fate. I don't have time to stop and think, to hesitate, cause hesitation gets you killed. I started leaving my school with a group of my friends on our way out of town, hoping to avoid the brunt of whatever this thing is. When we left it was a group of twenty of us, eleven girls, seven boys and two teachers. The first to go was a girl, she rounded a corner and ran into a mob. She might have made it if she ran or didn't scream like she did. But she screamed and froze, never stood a chance. The rest of us tried to help her but we ended up losing one of the teachers and a guy who tried to carry them both out. The rest of us ran while they still screamed for help. God, I will never forget there pleas.
We made it a few more miles before some of the girls and guys needed to stop for a break. One of the girls snapped, to much for her to handle I guess, and started sobbing and yelling, "To Hell with you.. you things!". Thats when we heard the moans. They were all around us, trapped in car, house, stuck under knocked over trees, but the worst were the ones that were free. They came out of dark alleys and crawled up out of ditches with broken legs. "Run! Split up!" I yelled to our group as I started pulling them up off the ground and shoving them towards the areas without any of those things. One came up behind me and dug its hands into my shoulder, wincing I kicked back into its stomach knocking it into a group of them. That opened a path for me and I ran. I could hear screams as they were surrounded, some of help, others yelled prayers, but I didn't look back. I couldn't cause I knew I wouldn't be able to walk away from what I saw. I couldn't hesitate.
As I am walking down the road I decide that those things are zombies. It shouldn't be possible, but what else could they be? Dead people rising back up and feasting on the living? The almost comical imaginings of Hollywood have become a horrifying reality. I spot the edge of town and see an old farm house a few miles down the road. From what I remember it is abandoned so it should make a good place to rest for the night.
As I walk to the house I start to let my thoughts wonder. To think only two weeks ago I scoffed at the news reports of people being maliciously attacked by others who were claimed to have dropped dead mysteriously hours before hand. And to think only a week ago I started to hear about those types of cases happening in town as well. I never thought that something like this would ever happen. Even with the reports happening across the country, and even in neighboring states, it had always been so distant. Never anything to worry about, that is up until it was right on your doorsteps trying to claw its way into eat you.
