Chapter THREE
The day dragged by. Pretty soon, lunch came around and after I went through the line, I sat at my usual table with Angelo, Deacon, Armondo, Max, and Shondra. Although, Luke wasn’t there yet, the group were discussing Marvel versus DC characters. This is the ultimate debate topic. No one group will pick one to decide on. There will always be a debate.
When I sat down, I was instantly bombarded with questions.
“Isn’t Batman better than Superman?”
“Doesn’t the Green Lantern die?”
“Is Indiana Jones even a part of this?”
I lifted my hands up. “Hey, hey, slow down! I’m not in this topic unless my ears perk up.” With that, I lifted my greasy pizza and engulfed the cheesy goodness.
Angelo grinned. “Sia, Max said Marvel sucks.”
That boy knew how to get me. I nearly chocked on the bite I was chewing. I cleared my throat and drank a sip of chocolate milk to wash down the bite. “The hell it does! Marvel is amazing! You should be ashamed of yourself!”
Deacon handed Angelo a waded up bill. My eyes narrowed. “What’s that for? Did you bet on me?”
Deacons spoke up. “I bet Angelo that you wouldn’t get mad that Max knows nothing about Marvel or DC.”
My eyes widened. I turned to Max. “Max! You don’t know anything about either?” Poor guy. His face reddened. “Yeah, my mom says she doesn’t want me near stuff my dad was interested in.”
I instantly felt sorry for him. His dad left him and his mom when he was twelve. He took all his mothers savings and left with his coworker that he had been having an affair with for seven months. His father’s leaving is still raw on his shoulders. He really looked up to him. “It’s okay Max. You are forgiven.” I thought for a moment, a mischievous grin spreading along my face. “If, of course, you are on my team for this weekend.” Armondo laughed and Max smiled.
“Yeah, okay. I’ll take it. It’s a deal.” Deacon leaned in close to my ear. “Five bucks says he won’t come.” I smacked his arm. “Leave him alone.” I turned my attention back to my waiting pizza and dove right in, yet again melting at it’s nourishment.
“Anyways. Who’s Jordan Blackwood? I’ve been hearing that name all day.” Everyone I looked at seemed to not know who he is. “Oh well. I guess I’ll find out later.”
Luke came strolling through the crowds of people and sat down next to Armondo. His face literally glowed. “Hey everyone, listen up.”
Once he had our attention, he spoke again. “There’s three new seniors at our school. Two guys and one girl. I know the girl is Jasmine, but the other two I have no clue. One is very short, though. Anyways Jasmine...wow. She’s smokin’!”
Armondo smacked his shoulder and pointed to me. Luke blushed. “No offense Sia. You’re hot too, but you’re a friend.”
I nodded. I’m used to this by now. Obviously I’m a girl but, I would love for them to stop treating me like one. My feelings rarely get hurt and they want to be cautious around me. I hate it.
Well, except Angelo. “Give her some credit. She’s not a baby. You don’t have to do that.”
Before they started to fight, I interrupted. “So, what about Jasmine. You like her?” Luke blushed. That was all the answer I needed.
The sound of the bell ringing, signaled the end of lunch and the start of sixth period. We all said our goodbyes and Angelo walked me to the garbage cans to throw our trays away and then half way to my class as usual. Before he walked in his class, he gave me my skateboard back.
