Don't write about something unless you understand it and/or have experienced it. If you're going to write about a certain act, experience, sexuality, disorder, etc. then do your research. This especially goes for serious topics such as rape, abuse, self harm, drugs, dysphoria, etc.
I've seen so many people write about these serious topics when they have no experience with them and it can be really obvious in their writing. It's even worse when they try to romanticize the topics.
You should always do research on the topics that you are writing about. Since everyone's views and experiences are different, doing research could help you get different ideas on the topics in your writing.
Write what you know and/or do a shitton of research before hand! Please! This is a huge pet peeve of mine!
