If you are a writer, the book cannot just be there. It needs to reach places and people to be successful. To do this, you can share it on the clubs. The share your story page is where most people go. Others just PM random people, advertising the book, or they give a service or favour in return for their book being read/voted for/commented on.
The down side to the Share your story page, is that everyone there wants the same thing, to have their story read. Most of them aren't interested in anything else, other than themselves and their book. They have a mindset like 'Why should I look at theirs when they've far too many reads already, and, mines not getting any attention.
PMing random people can discredit your name. If you get someone who doesn't like you or thinks you're selling them a sob story, then they will tell other people and this is likely to mean no reads for you. It can also make you very upset, because people may turn against you and they will say nasty things about you behind your back.
If you are offering a favour in return for reads or comments, then it's a pretty good idea. The only thing is, if you review someone's book and it's a bad review, you get discredited, not to mention all the upset you get through horrible messages.
If you are tough, then by all means, go for it. If you're not tough, then I wouldn't recommend it.
"Then Kitty, what do I do?" I hear you cry.
Well, you could look up advertising books, or reading request books. @Da1Dkid has one. They are good to get your book out there. Also there are these things at the top of each genre club, where people request books to read. You can look through those and then advertise your story through PM to them.
