Chapter 1

(Dec 13th, 2009 1:13 pm Rosegate, Tennessee)

For the 5 years, Lorelai Tonbo Parker had been playing the violin, she had always put on this concert for the patients at the Rosegate County Hospital where her mother worked. Even when she was 8 years old and could barely play "We Wish You a Merry Christmas". Rory was the only violinist in the whole town, so no matter what she did it was impressive.

Since then the set list had expanded and crossed over several different genres, but she always played "We Wish You A Merry Christmas". Mrs. Kuznetsov, an elderly lady who had seen all of Rory's Christmas concerts always raved about how she got exponentially better at playing it every time. She, of course, wished Rory would stick to the classics for the concert, rather than play Michael Jackson and Nirvana songs.

Rory ran her bow over the gold block of rosin to prep it before she could practice. As a special surprise for Mrs. Kuznetsov, Rory was trying to master Tchaikovsky's Waltz of the Flowers from the Nutcracker. Rory was hoping to get in half of her practice for the day during her free period. But since nobody would come to open the music room, Rory only had about thirty minutes to practice.

Once the violin bow was prepared, Rory glanced towards the clock. She had about 20 minutes to practice before she had to go to class. Which would give her just enough time to run through the whole song twice as long as nobody interrupted her. Rory put away the rosin and nestled her cheek against the shoulder pad. And just as she was about to place the bow along the strings...

CRASH. Rory jumped at the sound, moving to hold the violin at her side by its neck in one hand. A boy with bright red hair tucked under a black helmet slammed against the window of the music room. He stumbled backward and hit the ground, a green skateboard flipping through the air.

"Jesus Mary and Joseph! Andy! Rory exclaimed, moving quickly to put away the violin and run to her backpack. She pulled out a small, but extensive first aid kit. The words "First Aid Kit" and been scratched out with a sharpie and over it had been written "BFFs with Andy Hale Kit". A clever joke made by Andy's mom when she bought Rory this as a Christmas present to make sure her son didn't bleed to death.

Had this been anyone else, Rory would have ignored it. But sadly it had been Andy Hale, her best friend and a walking magnet for disaster. Not only that, an accident for Andy meant a bloodbath for any normal human. She ran for the music room door and made her way quickly to the school's courtyard, where she almost immediately found Andy laying on his stomach in a heap on the floor. His green skateboard upside down near her feet.

So while this would worry any normal human, Rory was unphased and more annoyed that this was happening at such an inopportune time. Rory had seen Andy in a much worse condition, the worst would have to be when he had gotten both of them sent to the hospital when they had first met.

In Rory's first week of moving to Rosegate from Charm City, which is a big city across the Tennessee River and about 40 miles from Rosegate, Rory went to the Hale's Diner with her babysitter for lunch. Where Andy's mom and little Andy spend all their free time, even then. Five-year-old Rory would be challenged by five-year-old Andy to a game of darts, which to this day Rory always win (Rory's aim is nothing short of impeccable). This fact frustrated little Andy and resulted in a full on MMA fight between two five-year-olds. Where Andy hit his head against the wall resulting in a pool of blood and Rory got stabbed with a dart. The two of them then surprised Mrs. Parker at the emergency room and sealed their friendship for life.

"Andy what the hell" Rory exclaimed, moving to help him sit up. His jeans are torn up and there are some scrapes on his knees leaving him a bloody mess.
