Letting out a huff, you hastily carried the box full of your mom's possessions towards her new office, trying to rack your brains for the door number she had given you just a few hours ago.
Your mom had been hopping from one job to another lately and no matter how good the pay was or the employee benefits were, she never seemed to be able to settle and be happy of any of the jobs she had found. It seemed that she had a new job every month and this time she had been hired to a famous talent agency. So far, she seemed to like her new job, starting work the day after she got the call even though they told her she could begin working the next week. She had been working so much that to your dismay, she had asked you to move her possessions to her brand-new office for her with promises of eating at your favorite ramen shop later that night (to which you hesitantly agreed to since she forgets some of her promises sometimes).
Was it Office 602? you ask yourself, furrowing your brow as you continued to walk towards the entrance under the blazing heat of the summer sun. The fact that it was afternoon wasn't helping you cool down either. Or 206?
[A/N: Let's just pretend it's summer. Okay thanks XD]
You shook those thoughts away and continued to walk forward, almost not noticing the glass doors because of the box that you held in front of you. Pushing through the heavy doors with your hip, you slipped in the small gap that you had managed to make, careful not to drop what you were holding in the process. As soon as you had gotten through, you noticed the receptionist area smack dab in the middle of the huge lobby with about three receptionists positioned on three different sides of the counter. As your eyes wandered around, you noticed that the room seemed to be narrowed into two corridors, an endless sea of people filing in and out of both directions. Looking to the side, you were blinded by the harsh glare of the sunlight that bounced off each corner. The walls were all made out of glass with thick metal beams supporting the sides and because of this, the lobby seemed to have a harsh glare to it, making you turn away from the brightness.
"Excuse me," you greeted the first receptionist with a sweet smile as she looked up from her phone, raising her brow.
"Yes?" she answered you curtly, as if you weren't worth her time. Ignoring her tone, you continued to smile at her, hoping that maybe if you show at least a little bit of politeness, she might be able to not only tell you which office your mom was assigned to but at the same time show you were it was. "I'm a little lost," you tell her apologetically as you settled the box on the counter. Her face twisted into a frown once she realized how dusty the box was making her desk. "And I need to know which office [Mom's Name] is assigned to. If you could, would you please tell me?" you continued, your face turning into somewhat of an innocent angel (no matter how much of an opposite you are to what you're showing).
The receptionist who seemed so perky as she talked to the phone a few moments ago now looked like she wanted anything to do but with you. "I'm sorry but as you could see, I- all of the receptionists, in fact- are all busy. Maybe you could wait for about twenty minutes?" she sighed at you, the eye-roll that she gave you showing that her overly polite attitude and perky voice on the phone was actually fake.
Excuse me, woman. Do I look like I have twenty minutes just to wait for a stupid three-digit number? you thought to yourself, resisting the urge to grab her form the other side of the counter and vigorously shake her until that stupid Bluetooth earpiece would pop out of her ear and fall to the ground and explode into tiny little pieces.
Annoyed, you turned heel and began walking towards the direction where most people seemed to be going to, telling yourself that you would just figure it out one you have reached the elevator. It was too late to turn back now and ask your mom for her office number. By the time you would make two trips back and forth, it would be evening and the ramen shop would be closed by then.
Wait... you stopped mid track as you mentally face palmed. I can just text her!
In a sudden burst of newfound energy, you began to dig through your pockets and backpack, abandoning the heavy box on the floor as you continued your search. Although you searched and searched and searched, you still couldn't find the phone.
Only after a few minutes did you realize that your phone was left charging at home by no other than yourself.
You cursed silently and zipped your bag, your movements more rash now that you've finally managed to let go of all the contained annoyance you've been feeling. When your mom had asked you to move in her stuff for her, you never realized how big of a problem just looking for her office already was. As if that wasn't enough, the building was filled with snobs and people who thought they were too important and busy to even point a finger at the right direction. Every person who you approached seemed to purposely veer away from your direction or answer a perfectly timed call just to have a reason to hold up a hand to you and briskly walk away. After a few more tries, you decided to give up and continued to trudge on towards the intimidating steel doors of the elevator that glinted silver in the sunlight.
The elevator seemed to stop at almost every floor there was and since there were about twenty floors, you had to wait a total of ten minutes for the people from every floor to either file in or push their way out. Five floors later, the elevator was so full that you were pressed against the doors of the metal box. After what seemed like forever, it finally gave a ding and the sea of people had managed to push you out, leaving you in an unfamiliar floor with a soft red carpet and quiet music playing in the background. Although you knew that you had no idea what floor you were going to as soon as you entered the elevator, you had planned to ask the attendant stationed there if she knew where your mom's office could probably be.
Guess it's too late for that, you thought bitterly and balanced the box in your arms more steadily.
Leaving the decision-making to your gut, you followed the signs that led to offices 600-620, carefully dodging the rushing people that came from the same direction. Every office seemed to be similar in shape and size and despite the signs that pointed to which office was which, you made three wrong turns, finally finding office 602 when a kind janitor had noticed your lost expression and pointed out which way to go. Taking a full stop, you settled your mom's possessions on your leg and twisted the doorknob open.
Only to find someone else already in there.
"Who the hell are you?" he demanded, his tone accusing and hostile.
Shoot.
