A Haunted Detention

I huff as I slump down at the seat Ms. Victoria had pointed at.
"Nolan? Is there a problem?" She asks arching a dark eyebrow.
"No Ma'am there isn't." I sink farther down into my seat, not wanting to be under her accusing gaze. I glance to my left where Sunshine sits. She has her nose in a book, typical Sunshine. I wouldn't even be here if it wasn't for her chasing after that ghost in 3rd period. I should have stood my ground about not going, but there was something about her that had me following her like a puppy dog. No matter how hard I try I can never tell her no.
"Hopefully sitting here for an hour will teach you that skipping class and entering the teachers' lounge will not be tolerated." Ms. Victoria's voice interrupts my thoughts as she smoothes her black skirt and sits at her desk.

15 minutes. 15 minutes was all that was left of detention. That's it, but the freaking ghost had to pop up again after 45 minutes. Couldn't wait for detention to be over could it?
It started when Sunshine shivered and looked up from her book towards the door. Her book dropped onto her desk with a soft thud!
A look of realization crossed her face when the door slowly swung open.
"Oh, great!" I think when we see what's on the other side of the door. A man who looks to be in his early 30's, was standing in the door way, with blood running down the side of his face from a gash above his eyebrow.
"Where is she?" He asks, with his voice sounding like he was eating rock from miles away.
"Oh my, are you okay?" Ms. Victoria rushes over to him and when he doesn't respond, she reaches out to examine the gash but when her fingertips brush him she goes limp and falls to the floor.
Sunshine and I rush over to the door. I crouch to check Ms. Victoria.
"She's fine she just passed out." I assure Sunshine, when I confirm that she is still breathing.
"Where is she?!" The ghost asks again, starting to sound angry.
"Where is who?" Sunshine asks softly.
"My daughter, she's 4. I can't find her..." He sounds terrified.
"What is your name sir?"
"Adam, my daughter is Lily. Have you seen her? She was wearing a white shirt and blue skirt." He's looking around frantically. I can tell Sunshine is trying to keep the ghost calm, because who knows what will happen if he gets angry.
"Hold on, we'll help you. I'm Sunshine or Paige whichever you prefer. This is my friend Nolan." She points at me over her shoulder. "Do you remember anything, maybe about how you got the gash?" She gestures towards his head.
"We crashed into the tree out front. I hit my head on the steering wheel. When I gained consciousness she was gone. Please, she's only 4." I can practically hear Sunshine's heartbreak right only with mine.
"Your daughter isn't here sir..." Sunshine whispers, taking a step towards him. Adam tilts his head causing a few drops of blood to land on the floor.
"What do mean she isn't here? Was she taken to the hospital?"
"No sir, she's not here because... well because you're dead..."
"I'm what?"
"Adam, you're a ghost..." She takes another step towards him.
"I don't believe you..." He says. Sunshine nods at me but I'm already pulling up a newspaper article on my phone.
"November 12, 1990. A blue Ford crashed into the tree outside the local high school. The driver Adam Miles, age 32, died on the scene. His daughter, Lily Miles, age 4, survived the accident with a broken arm, and a cut where the seatbelt sliced her skin." I read off for him. When I look back up Sunshine and the ghost have tears in their eyes.
"What year is it?" Adam ask, his voice soft.
"2016. November 12th.... You're anniversary." Sunshine says her voice cracking.
"Lily was okay though?"
"Yes sir... She would be 30 now." Sunshine reaches out and touches his shoulder, she shivers as if someone blasted her with cold air but remains standing. "You need to move on Adam. You're daughter would want you to wouldn't she?"
Adam nodded slowly, "How?"
"Just close your eyes and say yes." She removes her hand. Knowing her hand would be cold, I slide my hand into hers.
"Thank you Sunshine and Nolan." He tilts his head back and closes his eyes "Yes."
He disappeared, in the blink of an eye he was gone. Sunshine wipes a tear off her cheek. She turns to me, her breathing was shaking.
"I hate the sad ones..." She whispers. I wrap my arms around her, "Me too." I mumble into her hair.
"What on earth happened?" A groggy voice comes from our feet. Sunshine starts laughing, and I extend an arm to help Ms. Victoria off the floor, "You wouldn't believe me if I told you."
