He sits on the ledge, just looking out over everything; from the grey, bleak sky that looks like it should be raining and yet is not, to the pea sized people below. Each of them with their own lives and thoughts and feelings, but equally all unaware of what may or may not happen in the minutes, or possibly hours that follow.
"Shaun please come down from there, this is so stupid!" Lauren blurts out
"you're only 15 for gods sake! There's so much that you've yet to do and places to go and people to meet?" Her voice is clear and firm. She doesn't understand, she thinks she can talk him down. Well, she doesn't know him like I do because if she did she'd be just as scared as I am, she would feel just as helpless as i do. When you're that far gone you can't ever get back. Not really.
He clears his throat, voice shaky
"Don't you get it? This isn't a game Lauren, this isn't some soppy love movie where I come down from here and become happy, there isn't going to be a montage of happy moments I live to experience. This...This is real life and the reality of the situation is I either end the pain or the pain ends me, because at the end of the day it doesn't come down to how many days I've lived or how many more I could, I died a long time ago....M-my bodies just late" his hoarse voice draws silent. The lump in my throat rising, his gaze falls from her to me. Those blue eyes piercing at me like they had last summer, only months previously. Lauren let out a sigh before heading for the rooftop door murmuring about how pathetic it is and he should he grateful when the door slams behind her.
I can feel myself shaking as the tears fall down my face. Stop it April, pull yourself together. I start towards the space on the ledge next to him. He gives me a dismissive hand gesture but I continue, I try to cautiously hoist myself up when I feel a light push. I look up at him, his eyes already on me
"shau-"
"No" he interrupts
"Shaun"
"No April I can't"
"I'm not asking; you jump, I jump. Remember" his arms fall to his side and eyes into a trance. I pull myself up carefully, I wonder what he's thinking about. I look down at the drop, the one I'd been craving for months. His head snaps quickly as if been summoned to life, he's so close but so distant.
