5. The Glade and Tour

My second day in the Glade started with someone knocking on the door. I groggily sat up and opened the door to see Clint.

" Morning Clint..." I said tiredly. I rubbed the sleep out of my eyes as he handed me some clothes.

" These are some of few clothes that we found in a wooden crate when you came up. They're for you."

" Thank you." I said as I shut the door when he left. I set the clothes down on the bed and stretched my arms, taking a few minutes to fully wake up. Getting into my new clothes, I smiled. I put on the black jeans along with the gray tank top that was covered by green trench coat.

Looking in a small mirror, I smile and lace up my boots and went down the stairs of the homestead to see Alby and Newt standing there.

" Good morning."

" Good morning Makena." The both said.

" So...today is the tour right?" I asked. Alby nodded.

" I'll be taking you on tour. You can grab breakfast on the way." I nodded and followed him out of the Homestead. Taking me back to the Box, I did a double take on my surroundings. There were walls that were at least over 100 feet tall, looming over us. Ably pointed down at the box.

" This here Shank is the Box. Once a month, we get a Newbie like you and once a week, we get supplies, clothes, some food. It had never failed till now since you and Coma girl got here." I could tell he wasn't too pleased to say that, "We don't need a lot—we basically pretty much run ourselves in the Glade."

" We don't have a clue where it came from, how it gets here, or even who's in charge of it. The shanks that sent us here hasn't ever said a word to us. We got the electricity we need, we grow most of our food, get clothes and such. Had the idea to send a slinthead Greenie back in the Box one time—thing wouldn't move till we took him out."

" So it won't send us back? Like it knows something is still in the Box?"

" Yes." He replied. My feelings at the moment were mixed. I felt confused yet curious.

" The Glade is cut into four sections." He held up a finger as he counted off the next four words.

"Gardens, Blood House, Homestead, Deadheads. Got it?"

I followed where his fingers pointed to. In the northeast corner had fields and fruit trees which was presumably the Gardens, northwest had the Homestead which looked pitiful on the outside, Then I looked to southeast corner where animal pens and a barn was located which had to be the Blood House, and finally in the southwest area was a sickly looking forest area.

" Got it." I replied. He studied me for a few minutes before saying:

" You'll spend the next two weeks working one day apiece for our different jobs here in the Glade until we know what you're best at. Slopper, Bricknick, Bagger, Track-hoe. Somethin'll stick. It always does. If you like blood you can be a slicer. Good at plants? You're gonna be a Track-hoe. Now follow me..."

Alby took me to the south opening of the walls. " Out there is the Maze. I've been here for shucking two years and ain't found no luck in finding a way out. Every night when the doors close, the maze changes every night. The Runners been mapping it out. Ain't been easy." He said as he nodded toward a concrete building. My eyes just focused inside the Maze.
