All I saw was grey. All day everyday, grey was all I saw. Sure, different shades of grey, but still just that plain old shade. I wish I could see colour, I wish I was like those lucky people who had found their soul mates already and could see the world in colour. I was extremely jealous, knowing that I would probably never find my soulmate. Everybody saw the world deprived of colour, until they found their soulmate, the one they would be with forever. I was 25 years old, and had still never seen the world in anything but grey. I sighed as I cleaned a table of the cafe I was working in. There were only a few people that worked in the cafe that saw colour, they always tried to describe it to us, but no matter how much they tried they could never tell us what it was actually like. They said when they first saw colour, it was only a little bit at first, then it slowly became bigger until the whole world was colourful. They saw it in the eyes of their soul mates before anything else. Apparently, you just knew which colours were which when you saw them. You just knew. I sighed, and finished wiping down the table before heading back to the register. A man and his daughter payed for some snacks, before sitting down at a table. A few minutes later, a fairly tall man walked in. "Hello, I was wondering if I could have a table for two? My friends arriving soon." He asked politely.
"Of course." I smiled back, before calling out to Julie to take of the register while I serving him. I led him over to a table with two seats, then gestured for him to sit down. He smiled gratefully before sitting, then began to speak. "So, my name's Phil." He smiled, extending his hand for me to shake it. I shook it, before introducing myself.
"My names Y/N." I smiled.
"My friend should be here soon, don't worry." He laughed, taking his hand back.
"He can take all the time he wants," I laughed too. "I'm much happier standing over here then working at the register." Phil stifled a giggle. He was extremely nice, and I was glad we were getting along. Usually the people that came into the cafe never made conversation, but Phil was a talkative person, and extremely nice.
"Also," he started. "I'm very sorry if my friend is a bit sad or doesn't talk much when he gets here. He's been a little depressed lately so I'm trying to get him to get out more, and cheer him up." He sighed.
"Oh that's horrible," I shook my head. "And don't worry, I won't take any offence to it." I laughed slightly. Phil smiled, before turning his head to the cafe door that had just opened. "That must be him." Phil waved to the other tall man who had just wondered in. He sat down across from Phil without saying anything but letting out a quiet sigh. He put his head onto his hands so I could only see the back of his head. I hadn't seen anything else, not even his face. "So what would you guys like to order?" I asked, breaking the silence.
"I'll have a latte please, and Dan would you like a cappuccino?" Phil asked. Dan nodded, keeping his head buried in his hands. Phil mouthed 'sorry' and I shrugged, smiling a little. "That'll be eight pounds, but I'll let you guys have it for free, since you're both so nice." I smiled, but before I could turn to give the order to the coffee maker, Phil stopped me.
"I can't let you do that," he said. "I'll pay, I'll head up now and take the order." He smiled politely. I handed him his and Dans order before he headed off to the register. Now it was just me and Dan, who still had his head in his hands. I sighed, deciding whether or not I should leave, or try to talk to him. I decided to be polite and talk.
"So, Dan is it?" I asked. He simply nodded, still not talking. I sighed, he must be pretty upset about something. "Well, I'm Y/N, it's nice to meet you."
He started to take his head out of his hands slowly, but kept it down for a few moments. When he put his head up, he had his eyes shut, as if trying not to cry. He was stunning, to say the least. Extremely attractive facial features, I couldn't look away. Eventually I forced myself to look down, trying not to be creepy. "Would you like to talk about it?" I asked him, hinting about his sadness. He nodded.
"Thank you." He stated before he started to begin explaining. He then opened his eyes, and looked up at me. His eyes. They weren't grey. They were some other colour. Some dark, beautiful colour. I think it's what people called brown. My heart sped up, and I began shaking a bit. "Dan?" I said, cutting him off.
"Yeah?" He asked. I sat down in Phil's seat.
"W-what colour are my eyes?" I asked.
"I wouldn't know. I've never seen colour before-" he immediately stopped talking. He was staring right into my eyes with his. "You're eyes. They're not grey." He said. "They're not grey!" He said a bit louder. "Oh my god." I whispered.
"They're- I'm not sure what to call them. But they're beautiful." He smiled, still staring into my eyes. Slowly, incredibly slowly, colour started to surround me. The once lifeless cafe was now bursting with colours. I looked around in awe, before looking back at Dan. He had brown hair, that swept across his face in a side fringe, pale skin dotted with freckles, and of course his eyes. They were the most beautiful things I had ever seen. Dark brown and warm, looking kindly at me. We had been staring into each other's eyes, completely in shock, for a few minutes.
"Can you see it too?" I asked him finally.
His response was simple. "Yes."
He continued to stare into my eyes, while I stared into his. Soon, Phil walked back to the table, seeing us gaping at each other. "Sorry I took a while guys-what are you doing?" He asked when he saw Dan and I staring at each other.
"I can see colour Phil." Dan said, not taking his eyes off of me. Phil let out a gasp. He then turned to me, although I was still staring at Dan. "I can see it too." I said to Phil.
"I can see colour Phil! I can see colour!" He yelled, finally looking away. He jumped up and hugged Phil, whilst he smiled from ear to ear. I stood up too, seeing people stare at us because of Dans yelling. But honestly I didn't care. Dan then let go of Phil, and turned to me. "Y/N." He said simply, before giving me a hug too. I hugged him back, not noticing I was crying. Everybody in the cafe clapped for us, knowing we were meant for each other. We stayed in that position for a few minutes, before letting go.
"Oh my god." Was all Dan kept repeating. I couldn't stop smiling, and couldn't stop looking at everything. Colour was magical. Everything was different, happier even.
"Well I guess I better excuse myself and let you guys get to know each other better." Phil smiled, before heading out of the cafe. Dan and I waved him goodbye, before looking back at each other.
"Y/N, would you like to walk around and get to know each other?" He asked, nervously.
"Of course." I smiled while taking his hand in mine. We quickly got our coffees form the counter, as Phil let me have his, and walked outside. The cafe clapped for us as we went out, still hand in hand. I couldn't stop looking into his eyes.
The eyes of my soulmate.
