"Why do you always smile when you dance?" Jason asked.
Jason Grace was the first friend Will had made when they met each other at the college. Will didn't make nearly enough with his part time job at Starbucks to go to college, but the security guard let Will use the dance studio and that's where he found Jason, reading a book. Jason's quiet and introverted personality fit right in with Will's ever sunny and optimistic demeanor.
"I just like to dance." Will simply said. It was easier this way, feeling only his feet and body shifting across the floor in graceful patterns as the world turns with him.
"Less talking, more dancing! I want to see that plié perfected by the end of today!" Madame Calliope called. Will still couldn't believe that Calliope had been willing to teach him.
_______flashback_________
"Can you dance?" She asked. Will immediately straightened himself as he blushed furiously.
"Sorry, I'll just go, I'm not a student here." He started to rush past her.
"That is not the question I asked. Answer the question. I do not like repeating myself." Will stopped short and found Madame Calliope studying him closely.
"I've never had formal lessons before, so I'm not sure." Madame Calliope nodded slowly as she walked to the center of the room.
"You're one of the humbler ones, I see …Yes." She said finally. Will furrowed his eyebrows.
"I'm sorry, what?"
"Yes, I will teach you. My name is Madame Calliope and I teach dance here. You will meet me here every day at four after classes. I do not tolerate lateness and do not expect me to perform anything for you. My energy has been used up by those insufferable college frat boys." She turned and stepped briskly towards the door.
"Wait-why me?" Calliope stopped and turned.
"Because you care about dancing. You love it. Otherwise, why would you be here every day?" Will just stared at her in shock.
_______back to now_______
"Point your toes!" Madame Calliope yelled from her corner. Immediately, Will pulled himself up on his toes, feeling the strain of the muscles. It was almost painful but , for some reason, Will liked pushing himself to his limits.
Will continued to bend and leap, biting his lip, his brows furrowed with concentration. Suddenly, Jason, grabbed Will's arm, almost toppling him.
"They're here!" He exclaimed. Will couldn't help but smile- he's here.
He and another girl would be on the curb. The girl would sing and he would either be playing the violin or a keyboard. His midnight curls would cover his forehead, muscles tensing as the melody ran through the streets, pale skin standing out in the background of the gray cement. He never looked up when he played, not even when people dumped money into his case. Will wished he could see his eyes, see how they gleamed when he played, his body swaying with the beat.
"Open the window, would you?" Will could hear the satisfied smile in Madame Calliope's voice. She loved his music too. Will managed to wedge the upper half of the window walls open and the cold breeze blew in, bringing along the music with it.
The music filled the studio and Will smiled and closed his eyes as he allowed the world to melt away. Will could feel himself twirling and leaping, his spins fast and then slowing that the melody reached a bridge. He could feel only his muscles, hear only the music. For the moment the only thing that existed was him, the music and the beautiful boy playing it. The music faded away as Will opened his eyes.
"Now that is what I want to see in you Will. You too, Jason." Madame Calliope said with approval in her voice but Will was staring out the window at the boy.
He was staring back.
The boy's eyes were as black as the night sky.
