Chapter 7
I heard Courtney behind me, “What’s going on?”
Before I could answer Ashley asked as well, “Another power outage?”
Sighing I got up and walked over to my dresser. As I got the flashlights and candles out of the drawers I called out, “Aaron, Josh, you boys alright?”
The sound of “yeah” came up the stairs.
I called out again, “Jen? You okay?”
A second later I heard her loud voice, “Yeah I’m good.”
Leaning out my doorway I said, “Josh you know where the flashlights are kept around there. Get each of you one and turn them on.”
Turning my own on I handed one to both of my friends, who quickly turned their own on as well.
Ashley sniffed, “Now what?”
I heard something whirl through the air and smack into Ashley with a thump. I heard a, “Hey!” and it whirled back in the direction of Courtney.
Once more did something whirl in the air when Courtney let out a quick shriek of pain. I pointed my flashlight at Ashley. She squinted her eyes at the beam and asked, “What?”
I rolled my eyes, “You know very well what. Don’t do that to people who don’t deserve it!”
“But she hit me with a pillow!”
I retorted, “And you deserved it!”
With that the power turned back one, causing us to blink a few times at the suddenly turned on lights.
Courtney had just opened her mouth to speak when I shushed her and ran over to turn on the television.
It was Courtney’s turn to roll her eyes, “You were just that excited for a little tv weren’t you?”
I rapidly flipped through the channels, looking for fox news, “I wanted to see what happened during the power outage.”
I sat on the floor in front of the tv and Ashley and Courtney followed suit.
As if it knew I had just turned on the channel the guy at the desk mentioned that some severe things took place in the last few minutes. Some car crashes happened, which I think is normal.
Then a line of children’s faces began sliding across the screen. The newsman began talking about how over a dozen kids in my area have went missing.
Ashley whistled as Courtney said, “I can’t believe how many there are.”
I agreed, “Neither can I. How can so many kids just go missing in such a little time?”
Ashley crossed her legs again, “I don’t know. It seems almost impossible.”
Before I could respond to anything the doorbell rang again. Not knowing who it was I called out, “I’ll get it,” to make sure that the kids downstairs wouldn’t bother opening the door.
I opened the front door to see Michael standing there and a silver truck pulling out of the driveway and leaving. There was a big black duffle bag slung over his shoulder. His eyes shot to mine as soon as the door was open and he shot inside.
