Prologue

"Mommy! Mommy, look at the lake! It's all icy and it's frozen!" Lilian's sister said, her hands reaching towards it. Lilian is a little blind girl. she has been blind for her entire life, so far. "Lilian, you have to wait. You can't go out there. You can't see, that's why you can't go." her mother said. "I can't wait to see Iris! Well, hear her!" Lilian said, her hands being her eyes. It was winter, and it snowed and snowed every day in their little town. "We're almost there!" Lilian's little sister said, beaming with joy. "I can't wait to hear Iris's voice and the voices of her family!" Lilian said softly. The train stopped and the doors opened. "Its our stop. Come on, girls." Lilian's mother said, grabbing little Lilian's hand and her younger sister hand as well. "Lilian! Lilian, it's me, Iris!" Iris yelled. She knew Lilian was blind, but she had something else. She controlled Ice. She always wore gloves and kept her distance from people, but not Lilian. They were best friends since the first day her family moved into her neighborhood. The curses upon their families made it easier for the two to bond. "Iris! can you hold my hand? I want to be close to you!" Lilian said cheerfully. Iris grabbed Lilian's freezing hands and led her to the edge of the frozen lake. She sat down and Lilian sat down next to her. "Lili, why do you tell me what you can't do? You know I have the icy thing... so why do you make it worse? Can't you tell your sister?" Iris asked, her icy blue eyes staring intent at her blind friend. "Iri, I tell you because you understand me. My sister doesn't understand that I can't see like her... And you have a curse on you as well, so it makes it easier for me to be able to tell you openly... don't friends do that? Don't they talk about their problems?" Lilian said, sounding slightly upset. "Oh. I'm sorry, Lili." Iris said, hugging her friend tightly. "It's okay." Lilian said, taking in her friends warm feeling. "Lets walk around. I'll hold your hand the whole time!" Iris said, hopping up and pulling Lilian up with her. "Listen for the song the ice makes, Lili." Iris said. Iris did her magic. She made ice appear and the sounds it made appealed to Lilian's senses. Iris made ice sculptures and shaped figures. But then, it happened. Her magic grew too strong. It turned on her. "Lili, watch out! Lili, run!" Iris said, trying to fight back her magic. Lili got scared because she couldn't run, she couldn't see. "Iri.... Iri... Where are you? I can't sense your warmth... Iri.... Iri..." Lilian cried. She feared for Iris's life, not her own. "Lili.... Wait! I'll be right there! Lili, no! Lili, don't follow my voice! You have to wait!" Iris cried, icy tears streaming down her cheeks. As she fought back her own forces, the adults couldn't do a thing. They were powerless against something Iris made. "I can't..... Stop it....." Iris yelled. As she reached out a hand to her sight impaired friend, she struck her with ice. It was an accident and it wasn't meant to happen. Her powers were too strong for her to handle. As the ice hit her friends arm and froze her slowly, Iris cried and put her gloves back on and rushed to Lilians side. "Lili..... Don't die... Please don't die..." Iris said. Her icy blue eyes were still shedding tears. "I won't, I won't.... I promise..... Remember? If I die....... Who will keep you..... calm?" Lilian said. She held onto her friend as her arm regained feel and she could move again. "Lili.... I'm sorry... I promise I won do it again..." Iris said, whipping her tears and picking up her friend. "It's not your fault. The ice wanted to be free. I heard its song. It wanted to be free..." Lilian said, drifting to sleep in Iris's arms.
