"Jor....Jordan!"
Distant squawking slowly seeped into the edges of Jeordie's consciousness- and as much as he'd have preferred to ignore it, it was getting closer and louder and louder still; Until it was right in the dread-head's ear and he was blinking himself awake, being jostled by the elderly woman at his side.
Rubbing at his eyes in a sleepy fashion, Jeordie bristled and sat himself up straight, brushing the woman's hand off.
"It's Jeordie.." he corrected in a murmur, slightly irritable, both due to Mary's lack of memory and her rude interruption of his nap.
Of course he's ignored, and the lady he wished so desperately would return to the front office continued as if she hadn't heard him at all, the harsh tone of her voice only comparable to nails on a chalkboard at the moment.
Jeordie wanted to plug his ears."You'd best perk up your ears, boy. The lord is always watching." She warned ominously, like a bad, foreshadowing fortune teller straight out of a B-rated movie.
God (no pun intended) forbid He'd slept through twelve minutes of praising Christ,
'Optionally', mind you.Jeordie wracked his brain, brainstorming whatever he could to get the old vulture of his back; Things along the line of 'it won't happen again' and 'I never fall asleep at church',
Which wasn't technically a lie considering he never attended church.
Despite Jeordie's internal struggle to keep a straight face, The lady apparently bought it, or pretended to, leading him back out into the corridors of the school, hobbling toward what would be the lanky boy's first class of the day; Trigonometry and pre-calculus.
At the very least, Jeordie was lucky to only be a few short school days behind. He shouldn't have too much trouble catching up, that is, if he bothered to try.
One of the 'perks' of being a transfer student right before the school year? Jeordie had no say in his schedule whatsoever. He accepted the printed-out sheet anyway, with a soft sigh, from his withered guide, whom he politely wished goodbye to as she turned to waddle off.
She ignored him and hastily made her exit."Well fuck you too..."
Jeordie muttered under his breath, exasperated, as he swerved to enter the classroom.
Toying with his unkempt hair, Jeordie was completely unsurprised, and yet still a bit embarrassed when nearly all eyes turned to him.
Sure, he was a new student. But this just seemed excessive.
The teacher was nice enough, which was a bonus, offering Jeordie a small shred of hope despite students whispering and snickering just out of earshot."Just take a seat anywhere you'd like, Jeordie."
Nodding, the effeminate male offered a quiet thank you and beelined for the back of the classroom, gaze aimed at the floor.
Predictable? Yes.
But at least it'd mean less eyes staring holes in the back of his head. The classroom was rather large, though only fifteen or sixteen teens occupied it, leaving several empty desks scattered about.
And as soon as Jeordie was seated, he began to survey, peering through his lashes at the people who would now be his peers.
He tried to judge them from appearance; to guess their niche in the highschool food chain.
A couple likely athletes.
Some attractive individuals he could only assume would be popular.
A few very-obvious geeks,
A stoner,Out of the fifteen or sixteen people in the class only one person had truly captured Jeordie's interest, for more than a couple brief seconds, that is.
They were seated at the back of the classroom as well, isolated from any of the small groups, desk a couple short rows to the right of Jeordie's.
And wow, they were.... attention-catching.
Thin and fair-skinned, hunched over their workspace and scribbling into a notepad, was a young man clothed in all black; a pretty stark contrast to the rest of the room.
Even sitting, Jeordie could tell he was tall, and aside from the dread-headed fool himself, this individual was the only other boy in the class with long hair.
And what hair it was; Long and glossy and smooth-looking, it was near past rib-length, obscuring the dates on the back of the person's shirt.
With a hunch that the T-shirt likely advertised some band on the front, Jeordie only became more internally giddy.
The other student was attractive, not in a conventional way per se, but with sharp features and angular brows; a prominent nose and a lip ring that he were restlessly biting at.
Jeordie just watched, almost feeling envious, twirling tangled hair between his finger and thumb like an enamored middle school girl.Drawn back to the front of the room only when the teacher began to call role, Jeordie sighed softly, attention wavering in and out as he waited for his name.
Nearing the end of the list, the man at the front of the room called out for a Brian. Jeordie normally wouldn't have paid attention, let alone, taken note of the name, however, the voice that replied with a flat "Here." intrigued him.
It was nice. A rather- deep voice for someone in high school.
And it had that low, clicking, vocal fry that sounded like a creaky door slowly being opened.
Jeordie turned his head, impulsively following the sound, just to find the same classmate he'd been observing mere minutes ago.
Brian. He rested his cheek against his fist, admiring Brian's profile without a care in the world; His gawking only interrupted once his name was repeated at the front of the room.
"Jeordie?""Hm? Oh! Uh- Yeah... Uh H-Here," The young man stammered clumsily in reply, straightening up in his seat and acting as though he hadn't been utterly distracted.
However, Jeordie's gaze could only stay elsewhere for so long until he'd become curious and it'd strayed right back to where it'd started: Brian.
Only this time,
Brian was staring back.
With a brow slightly furrowed and a bland frown lining his lips, Brian had felt the gaze- for quite a while and now, out of sheer irritation, was returning one of his own.Jeordie, embarrassed that he'd been caught, quickly looked down to his desk and began to pick at his super interesting chipped-black nail polish.
And that was about the only eventful happening.
The rest of the class passed by harmlessly; Jeordie keeping his eyes and thoughts to himself as he lazily worked through whatever god-awful problem the teacher had scrawled onto the board.
Jeordie couldn't restrain the sigh of relief that fled past his lips when the bell finally rang, nearly-shooting out of his seat to shove papers into his binder.
Yet he couldn't help himself from taking one last glance around the room, as people retreated and fled for their next classes.
and once again, effortlessly, Brian caught his attention, simply by closing a notebook.
Jeordie, swallowing down his anxiety and possibly his pride, clutched his belongings to his chest and prepared to shuffle across the room like a shy child in hopes of starting a conversation with the individual who'd he'd been watching.
Sure, perhaps being so forward wasn't the best idea,
But Jeordie was the new kid. He looked weird, didn't have many friends, didn't have any reputation to uphold.
Basically, he had very little to lose.Brian gathered his stuff up silently, indifferent, though he'd surely seen Jeordie shuffling over, eyes flickering up to the dread-headed boy.
And then Brian just watched; Stared, deadpan, as Jeordie approached, only furthering Jeordie's own nervousness about how this situation would play out."Jeordie?"
Jeordie jumped, slightly startled since the voice hadn't come from the person he was focused on. Instead it came from the front of the class, Jeordie quickly shifting his attention to the teacher whom was currently gesturing him over.
Blushing, Jeordie only nodded in understanding and sent a final gaze to Brian, who was arching a brow in question, as he wandered to the front of the class; to the desk there, attempting (and failing) to act as if that's where he'd been headed the entire time.By the time Jeordie had been handed the papers and slip the older man had meant to give him, Brian was already filing out the classroom door.
Jeordie's shoulders slumped, attempting, poorly, to hide his disappointment as he crammed his paperwork in with his other possessions.
"Thanks." He spoke up halfheartedly, to the educator beside him, before he began to scoot his own thin figure out the door- only to be greeted by a vision of loveliness.
The old lady from the front desk again.
Mary.
Great.
