As my team comes in Charlie overtly glares at me showing he didn't appreciate that I wasn't at lunch. He doesn't like it very much when anyone breaks rules.
"You should have been at lunch Jesse, you know the rules." He scolds me. I roll my eyes and continue practicing my punches on the dummy in front of me.
"What's even the point in practicing so much, we never go out anyway?" Ashh says annoyed. "I feel like I'm never going to leave this place. I don't think anyone has ever felt as stir crazy as me."
"I'm sure something will happen imminently." Zachariah says trying to reassure her.
"Yeah, okay." She says sarcastically rolling her eyes. As if to accost her the alarm rings out. Zachariah gives her an "I told you so look" "Well isn't that an amenity." She says surprised.
"Maybe don't think so myopically." He says, putting his knives away in the front pocket of his belt.
"Maybe we all shouldn't get too excited too soon, the alarm rings rarely, but what's rarer is it's actually for us." I say not bothering to stop training. We all listen waiting for the typical maelstrom that happens when the alarm rings. Yet, nothing happens. I raise my eyebrow and stop kicking the dummy in front of me too surprised to continue. "Or maybe it is for us?" I say skeptically. We all gathered our things and started heading towards the prep room. We had to stop and look at one of the maps on the wall. We've all only been there once, our first day when they showed us around. Our team had never been on a mission. I mean, I guess I brag too much about my team considering that but you should see them in the training room. We may have no experience but we could still complete a mission with the same ease as the adult team who have had many missions and who've saved the world a couple of times. Or so I think we would. I guess I have an avidness for my team, but they're all I've got. I miss my mom a lot, but these guys help me forget about that for a bit.
"Hey, what are you guys doing out of the training room?" A staff member I don't recognize asks. "That alarm isn't for you." Charlie being Charlie blushes profusely out of embarrassment from breaking the rules. If this could even be considered that.
"Oh sorry. we misunderstood. We'll head on back after we take Jesse here to go get lunch he was too busy training he missed it." Zachariah says wrapping his arm around me flashing the staff member an award winning smile. The guard looks at me with a look of doubt but lets us go anyway.
"Why can't Jesse get his own lunch." Charlie whines, looking over his shoulder afraid that the staff member might come back and discipline them.
"Because that's not what we're doing." Zachariah says smiling deviously.
"Oh no, I don't like that look." Charlie mutters.
. . .
"I don't like this we're going to get in trouble, we're going to get caught and be shunned irrevocably. We'll be social pariahs" Charlie complained for the millionth time.
"I hope to god they shun you then maybe you'd shut up." Ashh snaps at him. He looks down at his hands and stays quiet.
"Charlie we aren't going to get caught, and Ashh don't be so mean." I say looking out the window keeping guard. She rolls her eyes at me
"What are we doing in here anyway?" She asks Zachariah as he types on the computer.
"Figuring out what's going on it's weird that there's barely any adult fighting members here but we're still not going on that mission. I can't figure out the password, you think you've got it, Charlie?" He says getting up from the computer desk.
"I mean obviously, you do know who you're talking to correct? I'll do but know that I'm not happy with breaking the rules." Charlie says sitting down and typing away at the computer.
"I think we've all figured that out by now, we have all known you for at least a year, some more." I say chuckling.
"Oh my god" I hear Charlie whisper his eyes widening at the screen.
"What?" Delilah says quietly in almost a whisper. I jump slightly at her voice coming from the dark corner beside Ashh. Sometimes she's so quiet I forget she's there.
"Zachariah, you need to read this." We all gather around the computer in curiosity. When my eyes finish reading the file on the screen I can't fully comprehend what I'm reading.
"Is this about.." Before I can finish I get cut off from the sounds of footsteps walking down the hall. I shouldn't have left guard now we're going to get caught and it's my fault. Charlie grabs a flash drive from his pocket and plugs it into the computer, it doesn't surprise me that he just carries one handy. I see the download bar slowly fill. There's no way he's going to get the file downloaded in time before the person enters the room. I see the bar is at 98%. The foot steps are right outside the door now. The screen flashes with a pop up saying download complete. The door opens.
