I sat there in the car, not feeling like getting out to go into the foster home. This would be the fifth one I’ve been to in all my fifteen years. I knew that there would be other people in there and I was saying now, I don’t like people and they didn’t like me.
I wasn’t told much about who else was living here with me but I assume they weren’t going to be here for long. I pulled out my I-Pod and shoved my headphones into my ears. I jabbed at the play button.
“I’m friends with the monster thats under my bed
get along with the voices that live in my head
and you think I'm crazy yeah you think I’m crazy
but thats not fair, whoa, whoa”
The monster by Eminem starts to play. I start to sing along closing my eyes to block out the light. I don’t know how many times I listened to The Monster but it was more than a few. I stepped out of the car, grabbing my stuff in the process, and walked up to the door.
It was mid-summer to I was in my self made shorts and an American flag tank top. The door was open so I walked into the house.
“Hullo,” I called out to no one in particular. I wasn’t really surprised when no one answered me. I looked around me and saw that I was right next to the living room.
I walked in and dropped my duffle bag onto the couch and sat down next to it. I put the headphones back into my ears and hit play, rewinding Battle Scars by Guy Sebastian and Lupe Fiasco. I leaned back and looked around. Learning quickly that they weren’t into decorating, I closed my eyes and started singing. Suddenly the couch sagged with the weight of another person.
Lara looked at me as she waited for me to take out my headphones. I sighed and took them out, looking back at her with a frown on my face.
“Hadley you have to listen carefully to me now okay,” She waited for me to shake my head and continued, “you’ll be staying here until you’re finished with high school and collage.”
I narrowed my eyes in disbelief.
“Who is with me here?” I asked my voice dripping with venom.
“Well you’ll figure that out in a little while,” She said in a voice that was straining to sound happy.
“ Oh thats so cool,” I replied with as much sarcasm as I could muster.
Lara stood up motioning for me to follow her. I grabbed my duffle bag and followed her up the stairs. We walked down a hallway and stopped at a room that had my stuff piled on top of a bed. The room was painted a dark red. I smiled at the color, seeming as it was one of my favorite colors along with black.
I walked in and dropped my bag on the floor. I started hanging my stuff on hangers and then moved on to fill the dresser next. I unplugged my I-Pod and put it on shuffle. I danced as I worked and sang along until I was finished. Climbing onto my bed I sprawled out to take up as much space as I could and continued singing along to my music. Lara had left hours ago so I was by myself. Or so I thought until someone else started to sing with me.
He had a deep voice that matched mine perfectly. I groaned and got up, turning my I-Pods sound up louder to drown him out. I walked over and closed my door, turning around and singing along to the song. I could rap the entire song of the monster and did so as I danced how I had grown up doing. Swaying along to the music letting it tell my body how to move.
I could dance for hours when my stomach growled reminding me I hadn’t eaten breakfast or lunch. I sighed deeply pausing my music and cracking open the door. I walked down the hallway and down the stairs. I stopped when I reached the bottom, inhaling deeply. Someone was cooking. I followed the sound of voices down a hallway branching off from the living room and turned a corner.
