Akilah

Chapter 5

After working in the company for a few months Akilah started getting into a routine. She would wake up, take a shower, get dressed and have a quick bite to eat then head to work.
After placing her things on her desk she calls Ian's office just to make sure that he had arrived yet; she had wanted to check up on him since he was really being hard on himself by working until dawn and not eating properly.

After a couple of rings Christina answers with a fake overly happy tone "Hello this is Mr. Maxfield's office how may I help you?"

"Hi Christina this is Akilah can I please speak to Ian?"

Christina's tone immediately changes "Oh it's just you. Mr. Maxfield is not here he just called to inform that he won't be coming in today. I honestly don't think it's any of your business to ask where he is or what he's doing but....." and before she could continue Akilah hung up the phone with a sigh. She honestly had no clue how Ian could stand her, she didn't mean to be rude but the girl was very annoying and she was rude to everyone but Ian. Yes she does have experience and all but she was not a very pleasant person to be around, also the only thing she did was flirt with Ian.

Of course he just brushes her off but still it was bothering everyone, or was it just her? Akilah began to ponder on the idea for a little bit; was she really jealous over Ian? She immediately shook the idea out of her head and it was gone as quick as it came.

She was a little concerned though; I mean ever since she started working in the company Ian never took a day off. The good thing was that there were no meetings scheduled that day so he didn't really have to be present but there was a very important meeting with Globex on Monday and Ian had to prepare a presentation. She had no clue if he was in a situation where he could do it but she just had to have faith; after all, the most important thing in Ian's life was his job. After contemplating whether to call him or not Akilah just figured it would be best not to and opened her laptop instead to look over some e-mails.

Akilah went back home that day with a sigh; she was happy that it was Friday but the office didn't feel the same without Ian there bossing everyone around and shouting at them especially her. She couldn't believe she was thinking this but she kind off missed him. Marshmallow meowed at the distracted Akilah and nudged her towards her empty bowl, Akilah got the message and quickly put down her things and filled Marshmallow's bowl with cat food before changing her clothes into her comfy pyjamas and drifting off into a dreamless sleep.

The next day was a pretty productive day for Akilah; she had cleaned her apartment, went to the gym and had gone grocery shopping. She came back home and had her lunch before opening her laptop to do some work because sadly it never left her alone; whether she was at the office or at home whether it was a weekday or a weekend she always had to do something related to work.

After finishing everything that needed to be done for Monday's meeting Akilah had only one thing left; a paper that needed Ian's signature of approval. She meant to give to him on Friday but since he wasn't in it slipped her mind. She cursed while rummaging through her desk trying to find her phone, after a few minutes she finally finds it and calls Ian.

"Hello" answered Ian after the fourth ring in a somewhat muffled tone, Akilah then heard him breathing heavily; he gave her a shock she was about to apologize for dialling the wrong number!

"Ian! Oh My God are you ok?! What happened to you?" Akilah said in a shriek; she was worried about her boss and could you blame her? He sounded like a 90 year old man on his deathbed.

"I'm just getting over a cold I'll be fine" he replied before coughing hard.

"look I'm coming over right now send me your location; I need you to sign some papers for me" that was Akilah's excuse but she honestly wanted to check up on him; she was getting more and more worried by the second.
