The clock was ticking steadily. Sans sat at his desk, staring at the wood grain. He felt wide awake, too much so to even close his eyes. A book on quantum physics was resting on the desk, which he had found himself rather interested over the past few days. The text helped keep his mind off of his current situation.
After reading for awhile, he stretched, and his back popped like a firecracker. Time to try and sleep. He didn't bother changing out of his shorts and tee shirt, as he climbed into bed. The soothing warmth of the blanket was enough to calm his nerves. He quickly drifted off, straight into a nightmare.
There wasn't anything new about this dream. That demon killed everyone, even Pap. Then they met Sans in the judgement hall. He fought hard, but in the end, he failed, and the evil human moved on to Asgore. Then they left the underground, and it all went black.
He woke up at three in the morning, drenched in sweat again. But Sans had the feeling that it wasn't the nightmare that woke him. A few moments of listening silently proved that someone was indeed crying, and that's what woke him. He kind of wanted to go and see who it was, but a more dominant part of him was telling him to go back to sleep.
After Sans let out a long sigh, he forced himself to stand, and walk out his door. He investigated for a while, and found that the sound was coming from Tori's room. Great. Just his luck. What was he supposed to do? Leave her be? That wasn't really a good option, in his opinion.
So, he knocked on the door twice. The sobs stopped immediately, but she didn't respond.
"Tori? You okay?" He asked awkwardly. All the response he got was a sniffle. He didn't want to just barge in, but he was worried about her.
He knocked one last time, and asked, "Can I come in?"
"... Y-yes..." Finally, she responded, thank goodness. Still, Sans was hesitant to open the door. He opened it just a crack, and peeked in. She was sitting in her chair in the corner. Her expression was indescribable. The closest thing Sans could think of was broken. She looked shattered.
He shuffled in awkwardly, and closed the door behind himself. "What happened...?" He asked cautiously.
"Nothing... It was just a nightmare." She was so quiet that he had to lean in to hear her.
"What about?" He didn't want to pry, but he figured he'd had the same nightmare at some point, and could probably help.
She glanced towards the window, before whispering, "Not now... I-" Her voice broke.
It was difficult to process what she was saying, but one thing was clear. She couldn't go into it. Sans completely understood what that was like. He lived that situation every day of his life. The only thing he could offer was his understanding.
"I get it. Don't worry, whatever you dreamed about. We won't... Uh... I won't let anyone hurt you." He looked down at his feet.
Tori took a deep breath, as a small smile began playing at her lips. "Thank you..." She murmured.
The silence that followed was slightly awkward, but not suffocating. Sans cleared his throat. "Well... I'll just go."
"Wait." Tori said, as he froze, his hand on the doorknob. "I need to talk to you. It's very important."
He turned slowly, his heart once again trying to pound it's way out of his chest. She did know he liked her, didn't she? And he knew she didn't feel the same way. Sans took a deep breath to try and brace himself for the inevitable.
"I can only imagine how you feel about everything that's going on." She started quickly, her face turning a light shade of pink. Sans didn't quite get that. "But I want you to know, you can always talk to me. I want you to tell me what's wrong. I want to be able to help you."
