The boy was found on a beach at high tide. By some miracle of the gods he was unhurt, but the whale that had carried him to shore was dead of exhaustion.

"Taras, my son," he said to the infant, "why did you swim all the way to Tarentum?"

The baby cooed and stretched his fingers and drooled salt water from his mouth.

"Now you owe your father. You owe the soul of a warrior who brought you back to me. May you always pay your debts, boy, or may you drown by your own weak endeavor."
