Rain poured outside as Madison walked down the hall, the sound of her footsteps echoing throughout the empty house. Pictures that once lines the halls were now packed away, along with those that used to fill the walls of the family room. She let out a sigh as she made her way downstairs, images of the past running through her mind. She had many memories here with her family and friends, but she would have to leave them behind here in Washington and make new ones at her new home halfway across the country in Minnesota.
"It's time to go!" her father called to her from the car. She turned around, getting one last good look at what she was leaving behind before walking out of the house. Her best friend Savannah and her boyfriend Christian stood under an umbrella in the yard, anxious looks on their faces. Something was up, and it didn't seem good. "Maddie, there's something we need to tell you," she said, taking Christian's hand in hers. "You're pretty, sweet, smart, and so caring, but I don't love you, and I never have. I love Savannah," Christian admitted.
She felt her heart shatter. She had noticed that the two had seemed to get closer within the past three months but thought nothing of it. She looked between the two, swallowing the lump in her throat as tears threatened to fall from her eyes. "I never want to talk to either of you ever again. Forget that you even knew me," she said, her breathing uneven.
She turned around and left, slamming the car door shut as she got in. She put on her headphones and blasted music, trying to numb the pain in her chest. She had just wasted 9 months with a boy whom she thought loved her back, and had wasted the last 10 years with someone she now regretted calling her best friend.
As the car drove away, tears rolled down her cheeks. Her feelings about leaving had now changed. She wouldn't be missing this place at all.
