I woke up one morning and saw a trail of smoke from the kitchen and I smelled bread. Although I am the bakers son, I am always putting my name in multiple times in the reaping ball for extra food, to give to the poor people in the hob.
I walk into the kitchen and help my father bake the cookies and cakes. After they are done I decorate them with pictures and flowers. I wonder where Katniss is now. Probably out hunting with Gale. That is one of the many secrets I know about her. Although she doesn't know I will follow her around the hob and people look at me like I'm crazy, but I don't care all I want is Katniss.
The next few weeks were chaos because of the reaping coming up. I hope one of my names doesn't get picked, I have so many non-useful talents, like painting, I'm not going to paint someone to death. That would get me sponsors from the capitol, but I don't think there will be a paintbrush in the cornucopia. I thought to myself, What if Katniss gets picked! Then I might have to kill her, I told myself not to think like that and kept baking and selling goods the next few days.
On reaping day my father bought me a nice set of clothes at the market. I walked to the place where the reaping is and stood next to my friends Bradley. He lost his sister in the hunger games a few years back and he had a feeling he was going to lose someone this year too. He is still sad that he lost his sister. He sometimes lays in the grassy fields and cries and yells into the air. He has gone crazy like this girl named Annie in district 4. I heard rumours that the winner of the 65th hunger games, Finnick Odair, loves her. He was her mentor once.
A girl named Effie from the capitol walks up on to the stage and plays the same video they play every year. She picks a name from the girl reaping ball and shouts out
"Primrose Everdeen!"
I feel myself pushing through the crowd trying to get to her and I realize it's not possible. I stand there petrified as Katniss says,
"I volunteer as tribute."
I stand there like my life is over. Until Bradley nudges me to walk on stage because I was picked out of the reaping ball.
I slowly walk up to the stage and shake hands with Katniss. I felt a jolt of energy when I touched her hand. It really is true love. As the peacekeepers walk me into the train I think of the day I gave Katniss the burnt bread and she ran off without a word. My mother and father walk in and wish me good luck and my mother leaves without the peacekeepers rushing her out. My father stays and tells me that he is going to Katniss to give some cookies. A few minutes later the train is moving and we are off to the capitol.
