I stared in horror at the thing making its way down the long corridor of the Maze. It was like an experiment gone wrong....better yet it looked like it came straight out of a terrible nightmare. Part animal looking and part machine.
It rolled and clicked along the stone pathway. It reminded me as a giant slug, covered in a little bit of hair, glistening with slime, pulsating in and out as it breathed in and out. I couldn't determine which end was the head or tail, but it was at least six feet long, four feet thick.
Sharp metal spikes popped through its bulbous flesh and the whole creature abruptly curled into a ball and spun forward. Then it would settle, seeming to gather its bearings, the spikes receding back through the moist skin with a sick slurping sound. It did this over and over, traveling just a few feet at a time.
There was even randomly placed mechanical arms sticking out here and there and each one had a certain thing to do. A few of em had lights attached to them, needles in others, fingered claws that kept clasping and unclasping. When the creature rolled, the arms folded to avoid being crushed. Who ever made this thing had a sick imagination.
Seeing the creature now—the beast matched perfectly with the sounds. I fought the fear growing ore and more in my body to remain perfectly still. This was out only hope from avoid being noticed.
Hopefully it won't see us, I thought. hopefully...
The Griever rolled and clicked its way closer, zigzagging back and forth, moaning and whirring. A strong whiff of something burnt stung my nose. It smelled of overheated engines and burnt flesh. Who would ever create this thing and send it after teenagers?
I closed my eyes, thinking of other things hoping that it's clear my mind from this current reality.whirrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

I peeked down without moving. The Griever had reached the wall where we all three were hanging. It paused by the closed Door that led into the Glade. Please go the other way better yet please just go away period, I pleaded silently in my head.
Go.
Leave!
Just go the other way!
Please for the love of god move!
The Griever's spikes popped out; its body rolled toward us.

Then it came o a sudden halt, then rolled once more right up to the wall.
We held our breath, not daring to make the slightest sound. The Griever was sitting right below where we were hanging. My heart was beating against my chest so hard, it felt like it was going to rip out. The beams of light from the creature shone all over the place, completely random, never settling in one spot.
Then, without warning, they went out.
The world instantly became dark and silent. The creature had turned off. It didn't move, made no sound—even the haunting groaning moans had completely stopped. We couldn't see a thing. Nothing at all.
We took small breaths through our nose to keep ourselves from not completely making our heart stop from lack of oxygen. Hopefully it doesn't hear us or smell us. I looked over at Thomas in the corner of my eye.
