The Cabin

I could barely see the ground through the fog but the leaves were still vibrant green to be clear. Regardless of the leaf color, I could still feel the chill of the autumn air. The twigs snapped under my boots as I trudged along the path.
My twin sister, Charlotte, said that to be more at peace I had to be with nature more. So, now I take a walk through the forest every morning. Normally she comes with me, but she had work today.
A breeze blew by, making me pull the sides of my red leather jacket closer towards me. I'll only be going to the curve in the path then stopping and heading home anyway.
As I neared the corner, I saw something behind the trees. It looked like logs stacked up. As I got closer it looked like the logs were in one straight line. Finally, when I got to the corner it became clear. It was a log cabin.
The dark brown logs were clearly made from the trees around me. There was a few windows and a door in the middle of the west facing wall.
I've been down this path before but I've never seen this. I guess I just haven't been down this far before.
Thinking it would be best if I didn't go in the cabin alone so I called up one of my best friends, Ella.
"Heya, girlie. What's up?" She asked immediately after picking up. She sounded slightly winded but that was normal. She's really into physical activity while I'd rather be inside with a good book and some tea or hot chocolate. I guess that's why we make a good pair.
"I found this old abandoned looking cabin while on my morning walk. Do you wanna go check it out with me?"
"Sure, that sounds cool. Are you on the normal trail?"
"Yep. I'll walk to the start of the trail and meet you there.
"I'll be there in ten minutes. Love you."
"Love you too. Bye."
I raced back to the entrance but it only took about 3 or 4 minutes. Naturally I pulled out my phone and continued reading The Girl on the Train. She got there about 10 minutes or so later. Not that I minded waiting. Any extra time I have is devoted to reading so I enjoy down time.
As she stepped out of her expensive new black convertible she offered a warm smile. She walked towards me and through her arms around me in a gigantic bear hug. I hugged her back but my strength was no match for hers.
"Um... I need to breathe sometimes."
She chuckled and said, "It's been forever since I've seen you. Aren't I allowed a little time for affection on my best friend?"
"Of course you are. I have missed you too. So has Charlotte." I said the last part very quietly.
Charlotte's a doctor and was on duty when Ella's sister, Summer, went into labor. Summer got very sick while she was having her baby, Lola. Charlotte did the best she could but couldn't save them. Summer died before they could get Lola out and Lola was born dead.
It wasn't Charlotte's fault, she did the most she could. But, after losing both Summer and Lola, Ella could never forgive Charlotte.
"Well, let's get going. I want to see this log cabin of yours." She offered a semi-realistic smirk and started walking.
As we walked we caught up on everything that's happened with us since the last time we had seen each other.
Finally, when we made it back to the spot the log cabin was, I looked at her expectantly.
"Wow, I actually doubted its existence. It's really here." She said.
I narrowed my eyes at her. " I love you too."
I grabbed her hand and we walked toward the door. Just before it, we hesitated.
I steeled myself and pushed the door open.
Suddenly, I wasn't in the forest. I wasn't walking into a cabin with my best friend. I was alone. In the dark.
"Ella!?" I shouted pleadingly into the dark abyss. "Where are you?! Ella!"
The darkness disappeared as fast as it had appeared. Suddenly, I couldn't breathe. I couldnt open my eyes. I felt my clothes stick to me with moisture. Water, I'm underwater! There were small hands on my shoulders, holding me down.
"Help!" I gagged. No one was coming. I was alone in this. As hard as I tried I couldn't surface. "Let me up, please!"
I had to inhale. The water went into my lungs like fire. I slowly faded into unconsciousness.
Once more, the darkness enveloped me. The fire from when I was drowning was gone and my clothes were dry.
I curled into a little ball. My brother drowned when I was 5. I always have nightmares about him coming back for me or for Charlotte. Why was I just underwater when I was walking in the cabin?
Again, the darkness dissapeared. This time, I was sitting in a wooden chair restrained down. I struggled to get out by instinct.
My father, mother, and Charlotte walked through a door I hadn't noticed before. They were all wearing the same black jumpsuits. Their features seemed to blend in and I could barely see the diffenece between their suits, their hair, and the pupils of their eyes.
They each pulled out black knives. "No!" I shouted trying as hard as possible to get out of the chair.
In unison, they laid the points of the knives on their wrists.
"Please, don't! I love you all, please." I pleaded as hard as I could.
I had this dream before. I know what's happening next.
On cue, they smiled and slid their knives across their wrists.
"No! No, no, no, no!"
I slowly watched the people I care most about bleed out. The color slowly drained from their faces until they were a sickly white color.
I was in the dark again.
"What's going on?" I shouted through the darkness.
Again the darkness dissapeared. A little girl walked towards me.
She was wearing a simple white dress. Her platinum blonde hair and clear light blue eyes made her seem like the girl all the guys would be after and all the girls would be envious of.
"You and I are the same? Over ruled by curiosity? Love for the unknown more powerful then sense or rationality?"
"That describes me but, who are you?"
"My name is, or was, Isabel Sanchez."
"Elizabeth Raines. Where are we?"
"We are in limbo. We exist but we don't. We are everywhere yet no where."
"That doesn't help. Are we stuck here?"
"Yes. There is no way out of limbo. For all eternity we are stuck."
"Are you sure? And how are we talking right now?"
"I am positive. And I don't know how we are talking. But I do now this isn't going to last long."
"Will we ever see each other again?"
"I don't know."
Isabel started to fade away.
"Don't leave me!"
I reached out to grab her hand. It dissolved in mine. Finally everything was black again but I heard was the word endure over and over again.
