the mountain

She watches the sun melt into the surrounding sky. The tinkering of occasional rain drops is the only noise for miles. The mountain she stands on holds so many memories, and as she closes her eyes, she could picture each one. She could hear the laughter and feel the love. The rain begins to fall a bit more aggressively and much noisier. The water drops from the sky cover the drops from her eyes. Her sobs are silent and heart wrenching. Deep breaths. Inhales and exhales. Still she cries. She collapses on the dirt, which is now mostly mud. Slowly the concoction of oranges and pinks dissipates in the sky, along with the rain. Soon, she was left with the cold, black night. The air felt thick and suffocating. Tugging at the grass beneath her, she sighs. As if taking a piece would somehow make leaving any less miserable. She closes her eyes, but quickly opens them once again when someone sits beside her. She looks over to the boy and locks eyes.
"I was worried." He speaks in a cooling tone, cooler than the night unfolding around them.
"I'm sorry." The girl attempts to smile, but with tears still rolling down her face, it isn't believable.
He wipes a few tears from her cheeks.
"Hey, I love you." The boy speaks again, wrapping long, dry arms around her. He hadn't been out in the rain it seems.
She doesn't respond in words, only a nuzzle and a kiss.
"I've been meaning to ask you," the boy pulls away and stands up, so she does the same.
He slowly crouches down and reaches in his pocket. After an awkward moment of shuffling around and mumbling curses, the boy pulls out a box. On one knee, he opens it to reveal a stunning ring. Getting caught on his words, he asks, "Bree, will you marry me?"
Forgetting a yes or no, she tackles him to the ground and cries once more. But this time, happy tears. No longer the pain of leaving home. Only another joyous memory atop this mountain.
"I love you, Robin." She sniffles and engulfs him in a warm embrace.
"I had a whole speech prepared." The boy pouts.
She smiles and nods, signaling for him to give his speech.
"No, you ruined the moment." He kisses her cheek.
"Aw, come on."
"Bree, the day I met you was the day happiest day of my life. Or so I thought until you agreed to go on a date with me. Then that became my best day, my favorite memory, my reason to live. Until today, when you agreed to marry my sorry ass. I don't know why you chose me, but I'm so glad you did. I don't know where I'd be without you. You're my everything. The reason I wake up in the morning. Waking up to your messy hair and blue eyes makes my heart warm. Every time you speak, I fall in love with you all over again. You're my life, and having you become my wife would simply be icing atop the cake. I love you."
An awkward silence.
"Are you done?" She has the biggest, goofiest smile on her face.
"Mhm." He looks rather nervous.
She then re-wraps herself around him and kisses him silly.
"I love you too, I will happily marry your cute ass. I chose you because you're everything to me. I'm just glad you chose me back." She lets her head drop onto his chest and closes her eyes.
When she opens them again she looks up at the sky. Instead of cold and black, it has now become a blue, starry night. The moon shines on the cliff where the two lay in the mud. The air less threatening, the world less scary and unpredictable.
