After Steven joined us on the dance floor, we danced the night away. Every once and a while my mind would trace back to Mark and where he went. I decided to make sure he wasn't dead. I tapped Athena and she turned around, big, wide, toothy grin on her face. I giggled under my breath at her.
"I'm gonna go make sure Marks still alive and not dead in the girls bathroom. I have a feeling some of the girls might've tackled him." She laughed and nudged me, lifting an eyebrow.
"Got the hots, huh? Yeah, over the summer he got really tall and thin. But, he's still like a brother to me so I couldn't do it. But you go right ahead!" she said, patting my shoulder. I smiled and ran off. I half needed to see him again, half needed some fresh air. He clogged my mind as I stepped outside into the cold Autumn air. I breathed in and out, listening to the wind whistle in my ears. I had known Mark for a long time. He was like a brother to me, and I never could admit my crush to him. Until I saw him 10 minutes ago. I knew girls would be all over him, and I also knew he would hate it.
"It's nice out here..." I jumped a little and turned around to see him, standing there, in the same handsome costume he was minutes before. From inside, "Beautiful Girl" by Sara Barelles started to play. I could hear the music, and it made the moment so much prettier. He walked over to me, getting very close.
"May I have at least one dance with you?" He asked and his eyes pleaded as if he wanted to say something to me. I nodded and he grabbed my hand and waist, like they taught in gym class, only this wasn't just some unwanted partner. This was my crush and best friend. Dont get me wrong, Mark and I had danced together before, but not like this. And that was also a while ago. I havent seen Mark since 6th grade, and God I missed him. Once in hand, he looked into my eyes. I could get lost in his eyes forever, but for now, I slowly moved to the slow song and leaned against his chest, listening to his steady heartbeat. We swayed in silence, until he decided to talk.
"You really are a beautiful girl, ya know. I've had a crush on you since 6th grade." I didn't even look at him, I just kept swaying with him to the music outside the school on this autumn night.
"Yeah, I never thought that you could change. You weren't the most attractive, no offense." He laughed low, only for me to feel his chest move. He turned me and we just looked at each other for a minute.
"None taken, I know I didn't look very appealing, but I've changed. And now that Ive changed, girls are all over me.." I looked at him, hoping that I hadn't lost my place in his heart to all those whores.
"I really hate it, Bridget. All they want is sex and the right to say they did so with me. I hate it. I only want a girl that loves me for me, not this.." he said, gesturing to his fit body. I laughed, which made him smile. He was rambling because he was nervous.
"Mark, Im positive that one day a girl will see you the way you are. Smart, handsome, funny, and all around wonderful. She will be so lucky to have you. But, maybe you dont have to look long." I said, looking at him, then down at the ground to hide my blush.
"I... I... love you, Mark." I got nervous and looked up, to find him smiling so wide. All of a sudden, I was off the ground and being twirled up in the air. He set me down and had a huge grin on his face. He looked at me and kissed my forehead, feeling his warm lips on my soft skin made me giggle.
"Be my girlfriend, please? I don't wanna be away from you anymore." I laughed and kissed him. Right. Flat. On. The. Lips! He smiled in the kiss and held my face. I put my hands behind his head. I backed up to get air and leaned my forehead against his. He was smiling like a fool, which only made me smile like a fool.
"I'll be right back, grab your car and wait for me." I said, running towards the school. I ran inside to find Athena, who was talking to Sal and Annabel. I waved her down and threw her my keys. She smiled and caught them, tucking them in her onesie pocket. I trusted her enough to give her my car keys. I ran off, but not before saying goodbye to everyone. I ran out to see Mark parked and waiting for me. I ran to his car and hopped in the passenger seat. He smiled at me and we pulled out of the school. One hand on the wheel, his other hand in mine.
