Dawn's Era

Chapter 1: Dawn meets Koda and Jolie

 One daring night changed my life. Tree branches, bushes, unfamiliar smells. All unknown to me. I don't know who I am, I don't know where I am, and I don't know who's chasing me. But all I know is to never stop running. It's a full moon on a winters night. Five wolves behind me and my little stubby legs can't go far. I have to try and outsmart them somehow. I hear a river nearby and run to it. I know I can't jump it but I can make it seem like I did. I ran as fast as I can go. I look around quickly and found a small bolder. About my size and shoved it into the water. The boulder made a plunk sound that made it seem like I jumped into the water.

I ran the opposite way and hid in some bushes to wait and see if my diversion worked. I say there for a few minutes in the quiet. I hear steps coming from all around me. I wait. My heart beating even faster. Then I hear voices.

"Great I can't believe that we lost her. Alpha Simon is going to kill us." One wolf said with a lot of worry in his voice.

"Geez you were always a wimp when it came to the Alpha. I'm not scared." Another wolf said.

"Oh, Alpha Simon I didn't see you there." The first wolf said.

"What where?" The second wolf said jumping up and putting her tail between her legs. The first wolf laughed. The second wolf growled and ran north and so did the other one. I was alone again. I could finally get some sleep. I lie down and closed my eye and slept.

The next morning, I got up a little early and started to walk. I didn't know where to go, but I smelled something in the air and it smelled delicious. I glance through the trees and saw a deer corps just sitting on the ground with no one there to protect it. I slowly walked up to it and started to munch. Its bin two days since I last had a decent meal. I ate until I was full and then took a nap. But as soon as I wake up I see two big black noses in my face. I jumped up and coward in front of them. But they didn't look like the wolves that chased me they were different. There was a male with a dark fur under belly, with a beautiful brown coat and a female with black and white fur and a tad bit of white on her right paw.

"Well, hello little one. Where's your family." The female wolf said in a light and gentle voice. She looks at the male with a concerned look on her face. The male on the other paw was nowhere near concerned and I think he wanted to leave me for dead.

"I... I... I don't know. I am lost and... and scared. And I don't have a family. Please help me." I say looking up at the two. The male just looked at me with a discussed look, but the female was a little more warm and thoughtful.

"No. we will not take this runt with us back to the pack. The alpha won't want her." The male said when they both walked away from me to talk about what to do with me.

"Koda, she's lost, hunger, cold, and scared. Remember when the alpha found you out in the cold and took you in. Then you grew to be the biggest and the strongest beta in the pack. Don't you remember." The female said a little angry.

"I can adopt her as my own. And after Tola died I have been alone. But you would know nothing about how to love something or someone if they needed it. So I am taking her with us as my pup and if you so much as nick her. I will take your place as beta because I will bring you to the ground." The female said. She walks away from the male which is named Koda and starts towards me. My tail has been between my legs the entire time they were talking. She comes over and bites the fur on the back of my neck to pick me up. She walks over to a tree and sets me down on the ground. She lays right next to me and I snuggle up close to her for warmth and protection. She whispers into my ear and says, "My name is Jolie, if you were wondering." I smile at her then she lies her head down and closes her eyes.

I glance at Koda and he watches her. He starts to smile then looks at me and the smile goes away. My ears tuck back and I look away. I lie my head down also and start to fall asleep.
