[Misty]
It's been about four months since I had dinner with Cordelia. We aren't dating but we're basically best friends. I invited Cordelia to the New Years party at my coworker's apartment. I have to be there by 7, so I'll pick up Cordelia at 6:45. It doesn't take long to walk to his house, only about ten minutes. It was 6:50 and Cordelia and I were walking down to Matt's holding hands. Her hand was warm, it felt normal to hold it. Her hand fit in mine like pieces of a puzzle. It's cliche, but it's true.
"This is the apartment. Door 4U." I said and knocked. Matt opened it and smiled.
"So Misty is this Dee?" He asked as he motioned for us to come in. I nodded and laughed quietly. Matt offered Cordelia and I drinks.
"Not til later, it's not late enough." Cordelia said and played with a ring on my finger. She does that a lot, but only when she's in deep thought or anxious.
"What's buggin ya?" I asked, making her draw out of her thoughts. She looked at me and just stared, said nothing. It took a minute, but she started to talk.
"Its just there's a lot of people and it's gonna be full with people, it just makes me anxious. It's no big deal though I mean, I'm just overthinking."
"It is a big deal if it bothers ya. If ya want me t' stay with ya the whole time I will, I don't wantcha to feel uncomfortable." I smiled and she nodded. "Good. We'll walk around together and have some drinks, eat some food, socialize a bit?" She nodded again and smiled.
"Thanks, Mist."
It had been a few hours and everyone from work showed up. I see most of them everyday, but I don't really talk to them. It was around ten o'clock that Delia and I started talking to everyone and having drinks. We walked over to Patrick and Chad, the gay couple that comes in every Tuesday and Thursday every week.
"This chardonnay is just wonderful. Did you two bring it?" Chad asked, taking a sip of his wine.
I laughed and shook my head no. "No, we aren't uh, to-together we um-" Cordelia started but I cut her off. "No, we didn't. Cynthia and Josh did." Patrick replied with an "Ohh."
It was about 11:55 when we all started watching the TV, waiting for them to start counting down. I looked to my left and saw Cordelia staring at a woman who was sitting by the window. She looked at her like she looked at me. It kinda made me bummed, but then I looked at the reflection in the window. I saw her eyes looking at mine. She smiled and giggled. She turned to facing me and hugged me.
"I get to go into the new year with my best friend. How lucky am I?" She giggled that cute giggle and gave me a toothy smile.
We all were standing, counting down from twenty. I have a plan, I can do this. We got down to ten and my stomach was upside down.
"FIVE! FOUR! THREE! TWO! ONE!"
And with that, I cupped Cordelia's face and kissed her softly. At first she didn't move but in a few seconds she started to kiss back. I smiled into the kiss, and with that we both pulled away slowly. She smiled.
"You do not know how long I've been waiting for that to happen. I just didn't know when and if it would."
