As he watched her look through the window of his car, he couldn't help but think of how he almost lost her and it was at his fault. It almost brought tears to his eyes just remembering that she almost died, it feels just like it happened yesterday....
The Day Of The Accident
He watched as his daughter sang along to her favorite song “Brave,” he thought she had the best voice he had ever heard. He couldn't help but love that she was so happy when she sang. Before no time he was singing along with her, when the song stopped she just looked out the window as she always does. He wondered what she thought about when she did that, absent mindlessly he asked her “What do you think about when you do that?
Knowing his daughter always replied with an honest answer he expected an instant response, but she took a while to think on whether or not to answer. After what seemed like forever she replied with nothing, but one word “death.” He was so surprised at her answer that he lost control of the wheel and drove off the road and into the ditch. After that all he could see was his daughter in the wind-shield and complete darkness.
When he awoke he was in a hospital bed, he looked around for anyone in sight, he found no one. The only things he saw was flowers and balloons in the room. It took him a second to register everything around him and remembered, the crash.
Not knowing yet if his daughter was alright or not, he ran out of the room only to be stopped by a shrieking sound coming from the machine right beside him. He realized that he had accidentally ripped an I.V. cord out of the machine. Ignoring the beeping, he ran out into the hall for a nurse of some sort. After a few minutes of searching he found a blonde lady, around his age, he asked her where he could find Casey Henderson. She directed him to room 209, scared at what he was going to find he just ran in, but quickly wishing he hadn't.
The sight of her almost made him faint, the way she laid on that bed looking like the all the life had drain out of her. It took him a while to realize there were other people in there, his wife, and his two sons, all looking as if they've been crying for hours. That feeling sickened him, thinking of all the possibilities of what could've happened to his daughter, all because of him.
His wife finally lifted her head to find him standing there, without another delay she ran up to him and embraced him in a bear hug. After a while there two sons, Brady and Michael, came and joined them in there sorrow. When they all let go there left only one question in his head that needed to be asked. “What's wrong with her?” He said afraid of the answer he would get, of any possibility’s. With hesitation his wife answered “Casey's in a comma, she also has a broken arm, they don't know when she's coming out."
Before he could answer Brady started to interrogate his mom. “You told me she was sleeping mommy, whats a comma?” Carry didn't know how to answer her son without upsetting him, so she just said, “A comma is a fancy way of sleeping and I didn't lie to you.” They ended up getting in an argument about the whole comma situation, but Dan couldn't pay attention to something that silly while his daughter is laying in a hospital bed and might not awake from her comma.
That night Dan and Carry stayed with there daughter, while there sons stayed at there grandmas. Dan didn't go to bed he just stayed up watching, hoping she would wake up. He wished that he had never asked that question, better yet, had let her go to her friends that day. At least she wouldn't have been in the car and there wouldn't have been a chance for her to get hurt, just him. And the thing that hurts him most is that it was his fault and he only walked away with a minor head ache and a broken foot.
It was all his fault, was all he could think of in that moment. His thoughts were interrupted when he heard foot steps from behind him, when he turned around he found the same doctor that gave him directions earlier. As he studied the expression on her face, he was relieved when she had a smile on. She walked in and said “I am happy to say that she is doing better than we thought she would, we do guarantee she will wake up, but....” The word but never means something good. “..... It could range from tomorrow to 6 months.”
